If Supernatural had been on HBO, the episode In the Beginning (4.03) would've had a different timeline. It would take place in 1982. John and Mary were already married and Dean would be alive. (Yes, there would be an awkward moment of him seeing/meeting himself as a kid.) Mary is out of the game, but of course we know she continued hunting the occasional case (Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox 12.06). So when she finds out that her friend is in the crosshairs of a demon she still goes to help. Azazel kills Samuel, Deanna and John, but the price to bring John back is more than a kiss. Mary sleeps with Azazel while he's possessing her dead dad, and he fathers Sam, which is why he has demon blood in him and demonic powers. Sam's psychic abilities would manifest similarly to Jesse's since he is the only other example of a demon/human offspring we have. There would still be other "special" kids out there who still have certain strengths and different powers, but Sam would be stronger because he is also a vessel. Mary would start to suspect something after Sam's birth, so Azazel would return to kill her shortly after and thus set in motion John's quest for revenge.

John and Mary going back and forth about names all through her first pregnancy, settling on if it's a boy they'll call him Joshua (John's pick) and if it's a girl, Deanna (Mary's pick)

But when it's a boy Mary just tells the nurse they're naming him Dean and John can hardly argue because where did Joshua as a name even come from, he doesn't know a Joshua

Meanwhile the angel who had been whispering that name in his ear for weeks stands invisible in the doorway, jostled from behind by a whole legion of the Host, staring at the child, as some version or another of Run On (God's Gonna Cut You Down) plays. We see baby Dean, eyes barely open, stare right back before the song swells and it cuts to black and the credits

HBO Dean Winchester Playlist

A new take on an old tale. Saving people, hunting things, the family buissness. Grit, grime and God.

I spent too much time carefully cultivating an era-appropriate, playlist for the HBO Dean that lives in our collective consciousness.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OKAY SO

I'm basically taking the transcripts and whittling each season down into 12 chapters (episodes) and making everything more intense/horror driven. Essentially a tightening of the narrative and finding the core driving force of each season and structuring the story to maximize the impact. Special spotlight on The Boys' trauma and all the weird, seedy things they likely would have done living the lifestyle they did. Making them more morally ambiguous, etc.

I've only gotten partway through the pilot as far as writing goes but below are my personal headcanons about the fic.

+ TRUE MIDWEST GOTHIC and southern gothic vibes

+ it starts out as weirdchesters but is very much destiel

+ Sam has a scar on his cheek from the fire

+ Dean has “your name” tattooed on his ass and wins an astounding amount of money by telling people “i have your name tattooed on my ass” and coaxes them into betting him to drop his pants. He gets hit only about 20% of the time.

+ Dean’s a speed freak but has pot plants hidden in nearly every national forest in the lower 48. Sam will roll with Dean on his birthday but otherwise sticks to pot or coke if someone offers. And the demon blood later of course. Dean flirts with Heroin after Hell but Cas puts the literal fear of God into him.

+ Oh Cas is T. E. R. R. I. F. Y. I. N. G. like sure he’s in a human vessel but he gives everyone the creeps as if they can sense he is other somehow. He kills people indiscriminately at first. Like a waitress comes to ask for their drink order and he smites her for interrupting. Dean is half horrified half annoyed like WILL YOU QUIT MURDERING EVERYONE THAT TRIES TO TALK TO ME WHILE YOURE TALKING TO ME??? (Which should have been his first clue honestly but even HBO!dean is dense at first)

+ Dean fucks every woman he possibly can because he may have a minor sex addiction (really he’s just touch starved) and it annoys the hell outta Sam in the early days. Especially when he brings them back to the room and essentially forces Sam to watch. He starts openly experimenting with men after his demon deal because who gives a shit anymore anyhow. He quits for the most part after Cas arrives because Cas just keeps killing them afterward.
