1/5 no spoiler review Disclaimer: I accidentally bought the ARC for this book </3 so dunno how much changed in the full release if at all.
The cover is the only good part of this book.
The dialogue might be some of the worst I've ever read in my godforsaken life. Why are multi thousand year old gods talking like this? The moment they 'awaken' they should really lose most if not all of their humanness, especially that of a bunch of 17 year olds. And the descriptions are not much better. To be frank the writing as a whole in this entire book is unwashed dick. The first fucking line in the book: "So, I'm standing there, trapped in one of my favorite nightmares, discussing gender euphoria with the demon who lives rent-free in my head." I should've DNF'ed before I even started reading because good lord. It definitely could've been 100 pages shorter. This book drags, there's a lot of nothing in the first half. And the second half… Honestly the story should've been of the gods during the events most mentioned in the book, it would've been a more interesting book.
Characters: Of course we have the classic main character is super special and incredible powerful lol Enzo is … ok. The main problem I had with him is when Gem is talking to him about finding their dad, he asks have you taken your meds? and Gem gets RIGHTFULLY angry at this and when Enzo gets pissed back for Gem being mad, it seems to make out Gem to be the bad guy. My brother in christ anyone who asks if you've taken your medicine used in such a way is the cunt Willa Mae; besides all of the dogshit dialogue could be good but again acts exactly like a high schooler and not a literal god. I mean including the jealously and everything lord have mercy. I love when she constantly refuses to tell Gem anything then gets mad when they don't know shit
None of the characters are likeable, which is the point, but if you're going to have unlikeable, morally evil main characters, you need to make the rest of the book interesting enough to read despite terrible characters which it's not.
By the way, I've seen a few reviews talking about why does a character say "there are no cis gods" and then one of the gods is heterosexual. Guys cis and heterosexual are not the same thing. Lord have mercy
Great idea but actually elephants foot ass writing. You won't die upon reading it, but it may make you want to. This is what I get for never reading descriptions. Someone recommended this for trans rep and fantasy, but it's urban fantasy which I hate with a burning passion. So maybe it's not fair for me to review this, but I'm trying not to review based on how I hate urban fantasy. I think
