How Gender-Affirming Health Care Providers Are Preparing for Trump
Time has an interesting article on how health care providers helping trans people are preparing for the Trump administration.
Trump has pledged to end access to gender-affirming care for minors and potentially cut Medicaid and Medicare funding for such services.
In response, providers are exploring strategies to continue patient care, such as facilitating travel to states with fewer restrictions. However, many families lack the resources for such travel, leaving them without access to necessary health care.
“It’s important to understand that the kind of lawmaking that we've seen in Tennessee and other states across the country, that's not something that the executive branch of the federal government is going to be able to do unilaterally, which is not to say that the federal government couldn't attempt to ban gender-affirming care for minors, but rather that the President cannot do it unilaterally,” says Elizabeth Sepper, professor of health law at the University of Texas in Austin.
The battle is not over.
Advocates emphasize the importance of vocal activism and legislative involvement to counter these potential restrictions. Maintaining patient care, educating on transgender health issues, and leveraging collective support within the medical community remain crucial amid this uncertain landscape.
