What's the difference between heir apparent and heir presumptive?

Hello anon!!! What a lovely question!

The difference between heir apparent and heir presumptive, in a simple way of saying, that the heir apparent is the confirmed heir the throne while heir presumptive is the “unconfirmed” heir.

For example: Prince William is heir apparent to the British throne because there is nobody who could alter his place in the line of succession. Queen Elizabeth II (when she was heir) was always considered heir presumptive because there was still a chance that she could’ve had a brother to take her spot because of primogeniture rules at that time.

Many monarchies at that time (and a few today ex: Spain) used male preference primogeniture, basically meaning no matter birth order, Men outrank women but women can still inherit the throne. This was the situation in England before 2011 when the law was changed so that is why Princess Charlotte outranks Prince Louis but Princess Anne is outranked by Prince Edward in the line of succession because they were born before the law was changed.

i'd love to know about Yassen's day off 👀

Yassen’s day off is part of my SCORPIA heir Alex series, ‘Heir Apparent’. It’s at a point in the narrative where Alex gets sent to Point Blanc, which is this setting is a (mostly) non-clones-taking-over-the-world facility and more a school for the children of the super wealthy criminal elite. Alex feels neglected so when he knows Yassen is not far, snowboards down the mountain to interrupt his day off where all Yassen wants to do is eat a pizza and have a beer and not be bothered by anyone. Then in comes the blond menace that bothers him constantly.

Snippet;

‘“Shouldn’t you be in school?” He questioned dryly; it was late afternoon on a Tuesday, the high schools around here had already let out several hours ago, many of the students returning home for riposo, to eat and rest away from the sun at its height.

But Alex’s school, being that it was several hours away and nestled into the French-Swiss alps, had no such issues with the midday sun. 

Alex shrugged, a devilish pleasure lighting in his eyes as he smacked his hands together to shake off the gritty cornmeal residue from the dough. 

“Bunking off. I snuck out.” Alex said with a shrug, as if it was totally normal teenage rebellion, like he’d slipped out to McDonalds at lunch, or faked an appointment to leave school early.

“Of France?” Yassen pointed out, refusing to show any hint of approval, or worse still, as if he was impressed. 

Alex smiled smugly and shrugged again. 

Rubbing his eyes with his forefinger and thumb, he blocked out the little blonde headache sat before him, and sighed, already imagining the state of his email inbox when he got back to his laptop, which he’d hoped would stay folded in its case for the rest of the day.’
