It was safe to say that your life had completely changed the moment you met Hellboy. You had never met anyone like him before and that wasn’t referring to his appearance. He was so different to any other guy you had met before and you had been struck by him from the very beginning. Hellboy had found you while he was tracking down some kind of demon. You had been taken as his next meal but luckily Hellboy and his friends got there in time and saved you. Just as much as he fascinated you, he was intrigued with you too. You were also different than any other woman he’d met before. You were nicer, smarter and your curves were just a huge bonus to your package. He would never willingly admit this to you, but for him it was love at first sight, though he would say it was lust at first sight, proceeded by a leer at your body.
He had refused your offer to help him out on missions, he didn’t want to put you into any danger. Instead he hounded his father day after day until he hired you as part of the research team. That way he had an excuse for you to be close by and the risk of danger was significantly lower, not totally safe but it was better than nothing. His father was only too happy really to oblige with his son’s requests, wanting nothing more than to have his prodigy close by to be under observation.
The two of you flirted with each other constantly but neither of you wanted to be the first to officially ask the other one out. Both of you stuck in your own cycle of self-loathing thoughts that prohibited you from seeing just how much you liked each other. Not even Alice could convince you that Hellboy was head over heels for you, she found that out after many, many attempts to get either one of you to confess to stop all the mopey pining going on. After another failed attempt, she had just about reached her limit with you. It was a Friday night and there was no current evil monster to be fighting so she decided a night out was long overdue. Alice burst into your bedroom in your shared apartment, “Come on, we’re going out tonight.”
You scoffed, “I don’t think so, I’m exhausted. The professor had me up all night tracking down ancient scrolls on the history of the Sphinx.” Alice folded her arms over her chest and rolled her eyes, “Excuses, excuses. Listen mate, you owe me. And I want a break from all this monster crap, let’s go get wrecked and dance a little, pleaseeeee.” You huffed and turned around to face her better from your seat on the couch. “I owe you? And just how do you work that one out?” Alice smirked, “Oh you know, from the countless nights of having to listen to you mope over Hellboy, from covering for you when you were behind on your gargoyle research assignment, and you know you owe me for being just the best damned friend you’ve ever had.”
An exasperated sigh left your mouth as you couldn’t help but roll your eyes along to Alice’s words. She finished her little speech with a pointed look in your direction. Your face twisted into a frown but as that did nothing to change her mind, you groaned in annoyance, “Ugh fine! But I’m not getting too drunk, Not all of us are able to escape the torture of a hangover like you.” Alice grinned in her victory, practically giddy with excitement. It had been absolutely ages since the two of you had been out together without the threat of some dark creature wanting to kill you hanging over your heads. At your sudden whine, she tilted her head, “What’s wrong now?” You chewed on your thumb nail, “I don’t know what to wear?”
Alice walked over to the couch to grab your hand and drag you over towards your bedroom, “I’ll help you pick something out, I’m not letting you have any excuses tonight. It’s been ages since we’ve had a girls night and you’re coming along whether you like it or not.” You laughed a little at her determination, “Alright Alice, I get it. I’m not backing out, just help me find something to wear.”
After a hour the two of you were finally dressed and ready to leave. Alice hadn’t let you have any control over your outfit, knowing you would get in your head and not want to leave your room. She had chosen a black and red corset top with thin shoulder straps and a square neckline that left the ‘girls popping out’ as Alice had so nicely put it. She paired it with some high waisted dark blue jeans, your favourite pair that hugged your ass and cinched your waist in a little bit. She was kind enough to let you wear some flats, having never been comfortable in wearing heels. Alice chose a similar outfit for herself, opting for a white corset top that had spaghetti straps and a pair of light blue jeans with some rips on her thighs. She also had her leather jacket on as well and you opted for your own burgundy leather jacket to put over the top, knowing it was fairly cold outside since it was approaching winter.
You were stood turning around in your mirror, checking yourself out when Alice came back into your room after getting herself dressed, “(Y/N), babe, you look amazing, I did a great job, well since I already had a gorgeous blank canvas.” You rolled your eyes at her obvious attempt to improve your mood and liven your spirits but couldn’t help the wide grin that hurt your cheeks. It wasn’t often that you felt this confident in your appearance. Alice came up beside you and linked her arm around yours, pulling you into step next to her and you walked outside your apartment down the stairs to the taxi that was waiting in the car park.
As the two of you chatted in the back seat, you saw Alice pull out her phone. You turned your head as you didn’t want to seem overly nosy but you would wish you had as you would’ve seen her messaging Hellboy.
A: Heyyyyyyy :)
H: Wat do u want?
A: You coming out tonight? First night off in weeks, we’re gonna get wrecked!
H: No ur a terrible drunk. Pass
A: Spoil sport. (Y/N) will be there and she’s always ~frisky~ when she’s had a few ;) ;)
H: is typing...
Alice grinned at her phone, it was just so easy to manipulate Hellboy now that he was crushing hard on you. She’d been able to get him to do all sorts for her, always hanging the threat of telling you how he feels over his head. She almost, almost didn’t want you two to end up together because she’d lose her precious leverage. A quiet ‘ping’ brought her attention back to her phone.
H: Where u at
Ha. Success. Now for phase two. Admittedly, Alice’s master plan wasn’t all that thought out. She just hoped getting the two of you absolutely off your tits would be enough of a shove in the right direction to get you to confess to each other. Or she would announce in front of each of you that you both liked each other and hopefully you’d be too drunk to make it awkward. Still, it was a better plan than either of you two had, considering both of you seemed content to never reveal such information out loud.
The taxi stopped outside a rowdy looking nightclub, the neon lights flashing through the entrance doors were bright enough to spur on a headache should you look at them long enough. Alice paid the driver before shuffling out the car, you following suit and went to go to the back of the queue to get inside. Alice grabbed your wrist, “Where you going?” You pointed to the queue but she shook her head, “No babe, we’re not waiting in that, we’d be there all night. I got Ben to put us on the VIP list, it’s his cousin’s place.” You let her drag you over to the bouncers on the door and once giving your names, she dragged you through the doors towards the bar. “Come on, I need a drink!” You nodded along, not bothering to say anything in response, it was far too loud and you wanted to wait till you were too drunk to care about your vocal chords to start screaming your every word.
At the bar, Alice paid for the drinks despite you offering, but you gave up when she pulled out a black debit card and waved it in your face, “Where the fuck did you get that from?!” Alice smugly grinned, “Agent perks you know, so all the drinks tonight are on the professor, now lets get some shots to catch us up!” You laughed at how hyper she was but you had to admit once you had a couple drinks, you could feel your own energy rising. It had been a long time since you’d been able to freely have fun like this, you had missed the simplicity of a normal life.
After You and Alice were temporarily satisfied with a pint of vodka and lemonade, three shots of fireballs each, and a pitcher of gin shared between you, you headed out onto the dancefloor to work off a little of your buzz. You had your jacket tied around your waist, twenty minutes of being in the packed club with what seemed like very poor air conditioning had you sweating like crazy. You rolled your hips and put your hands above your head, swaying along to the music, singing (well more like screaming) the lyrics in Alice’s face as she did the same to you. You were grateful she dragged you out tonight, you really needed this. You were feeling yourself loosening up already, the stress of the past few weeks just pouring out of you.
Alice grabbed your hand to pull you closer to her, cupping her hand over your ear to help you hear her, “I’m gonna go get us another drink, you stay right here okay?!” You nodded along, content with dancing on your own for the promise of another drink in your hand. At the mention of more alcohol, your throat seemed to dry up and you were all too impatient for Alice’s return.
A new song started and you gasped as you shot your arms in the air, twirling around to the intro of the Rihanna song. Though your excitement was short-lived as you tumbled into someone behind you, almost falling flat on your face had you not leaned on their chest. The stranger’s hands grabbed your arms to steady you and you began blurting out apologies, “Oh my god, I am so sorry! Are you okay? I didn’t spill your-James?!” Your eyes widened as you looked up into the face of your ex boyfriend. The two of you had an amicable breakup around three years ago, ending things because you just seemed to lose that spark between you. You’d tried to remain friends but the two of you just gradually lost touch with each other, but there was no hard feelings.
You felt nervous until he smiled at you, “Well fancy seeing you here. How’ve you been?!” “I’m doing great now thanks, I didn’t know you still lived around here, I don’t really get out much anymore!” James grinned as he looked you up and down, well as much as he could as you were still leaning against him. Following his eyeline, you came to that realisation yourself and blushed, pushing yourself off of him. “That’s a shame, it would be nice to see your face more often. You look great!” You let out an awkward laugh at his terrible flirting and the way his eyes were still glued to your figure. This was also one of the reasons you lost feelings for him, he was a terrible drunk. When he was drunk he was aggressive and very demanding.
Alice was waiting at the bar for the drinks when she felt a heavy weight on her shoulder. She spun around, ready to attack whatever it was, when she saw it was Hellboy, all the fight draining out of her. From the smell of him, it seemed like he’d already been drinking before he came here. “Hey, look who finally made it!” “What are you talking about, you’ve only been here like forty minutes!” Alice shrugged, “Forty minutes longer than you. What’s your poison?!” “Whisky. On the rocks!” With a wave of her debit card, she managed to get the bartenders attention to add on Hellboy’s drink to her order. She turned back around and grinned as she watched him scan through the crowd, waiting a little while before wiggling her eyebrows at him, “Looking for someone~!” Hellboy gave her a half-hearted glare, not bothering to answer her as he continued to look over people’s heads until he found you.
Ah there you were. Wait, “Who the fuck is that?!” Alice turned to follow his line of vision and saw you standing next to some guy, talking to him. You were too far away to guess whether you were actually interested in this guy or not and it was certainly too loud to try and hear what you were talking about. Alice glanced at Hellboy, looking down at his clenched fists and his gritted teeth. She smirked to herself, ‘Huh, maybe this will work out better than I thought. You’d better thank me later (Y/N)’ Alice thought to herself before reaching for her drink behind her and thanking the bartender as she passed Hellboy his whiskey and held your drink in her other hand. “I dunno, he looks alright though, (Y/N) seems to think so too. Oh shit! I recognise him, that’s um, oh what’s his name...” Alice groaned as she tried to recall the name you’d told him, “...James! It’s her ex.”
“Ex?!” Hellboy was not jealous. He said as such when questioned by Alice, who only rolled her eyes, “Right, and I suppose you smashed that glass in your hand cause you were just so happy?” Hellboy looked down to see the remains of the glass in his hand, brushing the rest of it off his hand onto his coat to fall onto the floor, muttering out, “Ah fuck.” Alice nudged him with her shoulder, pushing him over in your direction, trying not to spill any of the drinks in her hands.
You tried to take a step backwards, hoping to get lost in the crowd away from him. Your agenda had one priority tonight, and that was to get as drunk as possible to numb all your problems for one night. You weren’t interested in trying to rekindle anything with James, that ship had sailed a very long time ago. James was too inebriated to read your body language and followed you with a step of his own in your direction. “So what’re you doing for work now? Still stuck in retail?” You perked up a little at the opportunity to talk about your work, “Um, actually no. Things are really crazy for me now, my life is totally different! I can’t legally go into details but it’s basically a research analyst type gig. It has it’s ups and downs but I wouldn’t give it up for the world.”
James nodded along but he wasn’t really paying attention, his eyes going back and forth from your face to your chest, honing in on the way your breasts moved when your arms waved about as you spoke. “Hey so, I was thinking maybe you wanna come back to my hotel room?” Your jaw clenched as James interrupted you with his proposition. You couldn’t help but roll your eyes at him, but let out a forced laugh so as to not create any tension between you, “Yeah, no thanks. I’m here with my friend and I’m not gonna abandon her.”
“C’mon (Y/N), we’re great in bed together, wouldn’t you wanna do it just one more time?” His hand laid itself on your hip for about two seconds before a red blur flew past your face and into James’ face. “What the fuck?!” You exclaimed as you turned your head to see Hellboy behind you, towering over you. James fell backwards onto the floor where his friends he was out with proceeded to try and pick him up onto his feet. Your ex barely gathered the strength to move his legs with the help of his friends to walk over towards the bar, assumedly to get a much needed drink.
You spun around to come face to face with Hellboy, your arms crossed over your chest, “What did you do that for?!” He shrugged, suddenly feeling very unsure of himself under your harsh gaze. He felt like he was getting a scolding off his dad the way you were glaring him down. He shrugged, mumbling under his breath. The club music was too loud to make out what he was saying. You huffed and grabbed his wrist, yanking it forwards as you began leading the two of you outside through the front doors. You pulled him a bit further down from the entrance, not wanting to block people’s way, before turning on him again, “What the hell were you thinking? You don’t just go around punching people you psycho! What are you even doing here?!”
A light scoff bubbled past his lips and you felt your anger rising even further at him not taking you seriously. He wasn’t even looking at you. You reached up to grab his cheeks with one hand, turning his face towards yours, forcing him to make eye contact. “You look at me when I’m talking to you, now answer me!” Hellboy tried to speak but the grip on his cheeks had his lips all squished up and it was very hard to understand him. You loosened your grip to let him repeat himself, “I can see right down your top from this angle, was tryna be a gentleman, but I’m more than happy to look if you want me to.”
Your face turned beet red and you quickly let go of his face as if his skin had just scorched your palm, holding your arm over your cleavage. His words processed in your mind. Wait. What? Did that mean he found you attractive? No, he was probably just a boob guy or something. Or just a big pervert maybe. Anyway, you were getting off track, “Don’t try to change the subject Hellboy, why the fuck did you knock him out?!” Hellboy sighed, shrugging his heavy shoulders, “I dunno, Alice said he was your ex, ain’t you supposed to be happy I hit him?” You groaned, of course Alice was meddling again. This was so typical of her, you’d make sure she was given a stern talking to when you two got home.
You rubbed your hands over your face in frustration, but no longer anger, “Ugh, Hellboy, not everyone hates their exes and wants a demon to sucker punch them in the face across the room. We were just talking, sure he asked me to go back to his hotel room, but-” “Did you want to?”
Your mouth paused during your sentence as Hellboy spoke over you. Well no, obviously you didn’t want to, but why was he so concerned over whether you did or didn’t want to. Your lips slowly pressed together as your eyes took in Hellboy’s tense stature, the way his jaw was clenched and his hands curled by his side, how his brow was furrowed and how his tone was tight with an emotion you’d not heard from him before. “And if I did?” You’d decided to test the waters, not wanting to jump to conclusions, it being more like you were afraid of the possible embarrassing (and public) rejection you’d receive if you were wrong.
Immediately, you took notice of the way his body language was practically screaming his anger. You knew his emotions were on the surface given how he had clearly already been drinking before he came to the club, you guessed Alice must have invited him without you knowing so you wouldn’t be able to back out. Hellboy huffed, his arms waving as he raised his voice, “Well I’m sorry I knocked out your slam piece, all I saw was this dude all over you and thought you’d want my help!” You weren’t going to back down from him, you could raise your voice too, “Why did it bother you so much that some guy was all over me? Huh? You don’t think I deserve attention like that? Chubby girl can’t get the guy or some bullshit like that?”
“Yeah cause I’m so shallow like that, take a fucking look at me!” “Then why!” “Because I wish it could be me!” Your eyes and posture softened at Hellboy’s outburst. Judging from the way he turned his head away from you and cursed under his breath, he obviously hadn’t wanted to admit that out loud to you. You knew people were looking at the two of you, you’d caused quite a scene after all, but you didn’t care. People gave you weird looks all the time, this was nothing new. Hellboy sighed as you had yet to say anything, lowering his voice as he spoke once more, “If this has fucked up our friendship, can we please forget I ever said that, or at least get drunk enough to forget it in the morning.”
“Oh this has definitely fucked up our friendship,” Hellboy’s head hung lower if that was possible, his lips pressing together to refrain from speaking or to hold back tears, you didn’t know. You took a step closer to him and slowly raised your hands to cup his face, your actions causing him to snap his head up to look at you, confusion and hope etched over his features. “But maybe now it can be the start of something more?” Hellboy hesitantly wrapped his arms around your curvy figure, holding you as if in any given moment you would shatter into a million pieces from his touch. It felt right to be pressed against his body, his iconic trench coat was open, revealing the lack of shirt underneath it and his skin was warm against your own. He rested his forehead against your own, “Have I had too much to drink that I’m hallucinating again?” “Do you often hallucinate me in your arms?” Hellboy turned his head to press his lips against your ear, “I think it’s a bit too early to answer that question honestly.” Your cheeks grew hot from the implications behind his words, your own mind conjuring up potential situations he could be referring to. And yet your curiosity had gotten the better of you, your fingers toying with the fabric of his coat as you mumbled, “Maybe you should tell me anyway,” looking up at him at the end, chewing on your bottom lip to hide your rising nerves.
You heard Hellboy take a deep breath and saw his eyes darken. A cocky grin replaced his soft smile and it was turning your insides to jelly. His left hand moved from your back to tuck a loose strand of hair behind your ear, his fingers grazing down the side of your neck with a softness you didn’t know he possessed. “Maybe I should just show you?” Your next breath caught in your throat and your mouth dropped a little in shock but you quickly closed it lest you wanted to look like you were trying to catch flies. The heavy blush on your cheeks spread across your entire face and Hellboy didn’t think you could look any cuter. He laughed softly, “Relax, I was only teasing, you’re just too adorable when you get all red like that. Looks like we’re matching.”
His words only made you feel even more flustered and embarrassed, enough to have you burying your face into your hands, groaning into your palms as you heard him laugh at you. “Oh shut up!” you tried to yell at him, but it came out very muffled from your mouth pressed against your hands.
“There you are! Jesus Christ, I’ve been looking everywhere for you two. You fuckers just left me in there by myself. Some friends.” Alice crossed her arms over her chest and huffed out a breath at the end of her ranting, not really all that annoyed about being left behind, she had just gotten bored of dancing on her own. As she came up next to you two, she paid extra attention to the way you were all wrapped up in Hellboy’s arms and how red your face was. A knowing grin stretched over her lips, her eyebrows wiggling at you two suggestively, “Oh yeah, you two finally found some balls to tell each other how you feel. Awesome, now can we get back to the whole getting drunk and dancing part please?”
Hellboy only paid attention to the first part of Alice’s words, “Hold on, you have feelings for me? And I’m only just finding this out now? Why didn’t you say anything?” “Well you didn’t say anything either!” Hellboy shook his head and ran his hand through his hair, having the decency to look a bit sheepish, “I guess you’re right. I was just afraid you’d not be into me like that. I took being devilishly good-looking a bit too literal.” You couldn’t help but laugh at his wit, he was always good at making you laugh. You smiled bright, your hand placing itself on his bare chest, your head tilted down to look at your fingers tracing over his skin, “I always thought you were beautiful. You know red is my favourite colour right?” “Okay guys, this is getting a bit much to watch. Can we go back inside? I’m dying of thirst here.”
Before you could make a move towards Alice, you felt strong hands place themselves at your waist and hoist you off the ground and over a broad shoulder. A sharp gasp escaped you, your hands flying up to hold onto his coat on his back, terrified you were going to fall off even though you knew you were probably the lightest thing he’d carried in a while. Hellboy didn’t waste a second longer to turn around and start walking in the direction of the headquarters. You watched Alice’s mouth drop open before she followed you, “Hey where are you going? (Y/N) is mine tonight, it’s girl’s night!” “She’ll take a raincheck!” Hellboy shouted back over his shoulder. You shrugged your shoulder’s in apology, shouting a “Sorry!” in her direction as you were carried away in the night.
Scoffing at the reality of being ditched, Alice pulled her phone out from her jacket pocket to give Daimio a call. After two rings, he picked up, “What do you want Alice?” Said girl rolled her eyes, “Gee, hello to you too. I need you to come pick me up from your mate’s club, I’ve just been ditched.” “By who? I thought you were holding (Y/L/N) hostage tonight?” “Yeah she just left with Hellboy, they finally got together. You owe me fifty quid by the way, I knew I could get them to ‘fess up to each other.” She heard Daimio’s heavy sigh on the other end of the phone, “Yeah whatever, I’ll be there in half a hour.” Alice was just about to thank him as the phone beeped twice to indicate he had hung up on her. Rude. But she was happy the two of you were going to stop dancing around each other now. She knew Professor Broom was going to be elated, he was the one who told her to start meddling between you two in the first place. She guessed he was just excited to see his son genuinely care for someone, either that or he was desperate for grandkids? But that was not an image Alice wanted in her head. A shudder went down her spine as her mind wandered and jumped to conclusions about what the two of you would be getting up to tonight and the possibility of half demon babies running amok.
