Spooky shadow creature can’t find its favorite stick
Reworking spatter brushes. Trying out on a tree, added a Hidebehind to scare myself like a moron.
Explore the legend of the Hidebehind, a mysterious creature from American folklore that stalks solitary lumberjacks.
Hidebehind: American Lumberjack Monster Folklore
You just can't see them and then you are gone! Folklore says alcohol keeps the Hidebehind away. This cryptid was invented by drunk American lumberjacks.
From the description:
The Hidebehind is one of the scariest creatures in American folklore. It was created by lumberjacks who worked in the thick forests of North America in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This hard-to-find monster represents the fear of being alone and the real dangers that loggers faced while working in remote areas.
Leftovers sales are officially open for the Unearth Zine, so I can finally start posting the rest of the work I did for this fantastic project!
First up - the Hidebehind field guide spread I worked on with my creative writing collaborator, @squidpro-quo. This was such an interesting cryptid to explore visually and conceptually together, and I loved bringing it to the page in its many forms.
Leftovers are open for @unearthzine until September 29, so check them out!

Cryptid of the Day: Hidebehind
Description: The most famous fearsome critter of American folklore, the sinister Hidebehind is said to lurk behind trees and bushes, stalking anyone who wanders into the woods. Whenever someone went missing in the woods, the Hidebehind was blamed.
The 19th-century lumberjack legend of the Hidebehind and other shadowy beings across cultures play on humanity’s fear of unseen monsters. Why are invisible threats so terrifying, and what do they reveal about the human mind?
I've been watching some videos about different cryptids and folklore creatures from around the world, so I wanted to draw some of my favorites.
