How to survive a sleepless shift

Most babies are born in the middle of the night, or early in the morning. This means that a midwife’s workday is never the same. And it’s debatable to even call it a workDAY, as it’s more often a workNIGHT we’re talking about. So let me give you some tips on surviving yet another sleepless shift.

Pre-sleep

I don’t even know if this is a word, but it sure as heck will help you through a sleepless shift a little bit better. I always do this when I know I might have to work, because there’s a lot of women due around my shift, or when I have to work multiple nights in a row. Just forget about setting an alarm the day before your shift and nap as much as you can.

Coffee. Or any other caffeinated drink you can find.

Sure, this one speaks for itself, but it’s so effective that it’s very much worth mentioning. Drink it as soon as you know you’re going to be up a while. I once read that you should drink coffee every 3 to 4 hours to keep a nice caffeine rush to help you stay awake. And if you don’t like coffee, try any other liquid caffeine you can get your hands on. Fun fact: the hospital I mostly work with has two options on their coffee maker: weak-ass coffee and The Real Deal. You know which one to choose.

Switch it up!

Spending all night by a birthing woman’s side is exhausting, but doesn’t require you to keep yourself stuck to her side every second of every minute. So switch it up as soon as you start feeling drowsy. Go for a walk (and take her with you as you go, moving during labour is one of the best things she can do anyway), talk about whatever or do something else that will require a different kind of attention. Like reading the ton of work mail you never get around to doing anyway.

Roll down that window

As soon as the baby’s born and latched on safe and sound, momma’s cleaned up and happy in her bed and the sun starts coming up, it’s time to go get some sleep (if you’re lucky). By now, people with normal jobs get to go to their office, so traffick will most likely be deadening. Nothing more inviting than a warm, not moving, rather comfortable car while you’re so tired that you can barely hold your eyes open? Right. So turn the volume of your radio up, roll down that window to freeze your cheeks off on the high way and stay awake!

Be kind to yourself

Now that you’ve managed to come home safely, be it with a numb face from the cold and possibly in need of a hearing aid, it’s time to be kind to yourself. You never know when the next baby may want to arrive, so it’s key to act quickly here. Get around to finally emptying your bladder, grab a quick breakfast, hop in the shower for a minute or two and get into bed! Who cares about the household or watering the plants? It’s key to charge up and prepare for more sleepless nights to come.
