(2/3) To help hinge the de Kooning, our team created 1”-thick shims from 100% cotton rag board. The shims are each comprised of 64 ply of rag board, and then cut to size in our wood shop using a panel saw. (4/4) Okawara, an archival Japanese paper, is torn by hand to create individual hinges of different sizes, to fix the artworks to the backing panels. Hinging is already a delicate process – it involves carefully attaching valuable artwork to a backing substrate using non-invasive materials.
