The sun is gentle on your face as you turn towards the window. The light peeking through the blinds is making your eyes blink open, and your hand, where it had been pinned beneath you, clumsily covers your eyes. The pins and needles make fine motor skills a bit difficult, but you manage. With a tired groan, you roll back over, expecting to be met with the warm, solid mass of your boyfriend’s body. Maybe he’d grumble something under his breath at you before snuggling in closer. But, much to your disappointment, all you're left with is cold air.
The stark contrast between expectations and reality jolts you awake. Your tired eyes blink open, and you move to sit up in bed. The comforter that was wrapped around you falls off your body, pooling in your lap where you now sit. You rubbed at your eyes, your brain still trying to catch up from being half asleep. Shivering in the cold air, you gather the blanket around you again, swing your feet over the side of the bed, and slip them into the slippers tucked underneath.
You stretch your arms up as you stand, sighing in relief as the joints in your body pop, relaxing your muscles further into the warm blanket wrapped snuggly around your shoulders. The fuzz-lined slippers keep your feet warm as you make your way out of the bedroom. Eyes still half-squinted as your lids are weighed by sleepiness. Gosh, you didn’t even know what time it was. The sun was up, peeking through the windows throughout the apartment. Casting the hallway outside the bedroom in a soft, warm glow. Your eyes cast around the empty space, watching the dust settle in the rays of the morning sunlight. The calm quiet lulled your already tired mind even further into the groggy state. You felt the way your blinks slowed as you shuffled forward.
Straining your ears, you can almost hear the muffled noises of someone in the kitchen. The distant clanging of dishes being moved from the sink into the dishwasher. The sound echoes and muffles as it travels further through the apartment, eventually making its way to your ears. Interest piqued, though logically, there is only one other person it would possibly be. Especially at this hour.
Still, silently, you make your way toward the noise. Your mind wakes up with every step. Slowly, your eyes widen, and your shoulders straighten. You yawn one last time before rounding the corner to see the kitchen. To your not-surprise, Nanami stands there. His sleeves are rolled up to his forearms, the sink water dripping from his wrist as he rinses a cup in the sink. The water isn’t nearly as high as it should be, most likely done intentionally. You did tend to be a light sleeper, honestly, you were surprised you hadn’t woken up when Nanami got out of bed.
For a second, you just watch. You lean your body against the entryway. Wrapping the blanket ever tighter as the air gets chillier in the open area. Your eyes occasionally get drawn to the twinkling Christmas lights that illuminate the living room. The tree glows with multicolored bulbs, wrapped around the evergreen leaves, the branches adorned with various glass ornaments. A few presents already neatly wrapped and tucked underneath the tree, from various friends and family who’ve visited between then and now.
You drag your eyes back to your boyfriend, still engrossed in the dirty dishes that sit in the sink from last night's dinner. The two of you mumbling something about doing it tomorrow, it seems Nanami was the only one who planned on keeping that promise. His careful movements, the way the dishes never hit the counter with anything more than a quiet thud, the cabinet doors are never slammed, only gently closed. The soap is left slightly opened to avoid the echoing snap of the lid clicking shut. The thoughtfulness makes something warm fill in your chest.
Thanksgiving has already passed, but you didn’t think you could get any more grateful for the man in front of you. His quiet thoughtfulness fills every room, every interaction, every word that he says when he’s with you. Oftentimes, when you're both out in public, you feel like you're gliding along the sidewalk next to him rather than walking. He makes you feel alive in ways no one else ever could. You don’t think you could ever do anything to deserve him, you could do every good thing ever, and it still wouldn’t be enough. Words can’t even express-
You barely bite back the gasp that nearly rips through your lips at the thought that screams in your mind. Suddenly, you're envisioning the present you have tucked in the back of your closet, his name spelled neatly in swirly letters on the wrapping paper. It makes a giddy excitement fill you at the thought of giving it to him, of seeing his reaction. The way his eyes light up, the way his smile stretches, and his dimples sink. It makes a dopey smile appear on your lips as you slink back into the hallway, tiptoeing your way to your shared bedroom. Seemingly much more awake than before at the newfound excitement.
You slip into the bedroom, hopefully silent, and peek into the familiar spot. As you feel your fingers wrap around the box and pull it from its hiding spot. You revel in it for a second, allowing the box to roll over a few times in your palm. Another soft smile curls on your lips as you stand, the excitement near overwhelming as the moment gets closer and closer to the big reveal.
It feels like your feet walk themselves through the hall, your mind on another plane as it races through possibilities. The excitement is tinged with anxiety as your eyes land on the blonde bed head you love so much. This time, though, his face turns to yours in the entryway. His eyes are soft and light as they land on yours.
“I didn’t know you were awake, I would’ve made you coffee.” His voice is still gravely with sleep, barely speaking above a whisper as if still trying to be quiet for someone else sleeping in the house. You shake your head silently, walking towards him with the present held behind your back. It doesn’t seem like he’s noticed it yet, or if he has he doesn’t say anything.
It’s not until you're standing right in front of him, your neck craned upward to keep his gaze. His own neck looked downwards the closer you got. “It’s okay, I uh..I actually have something for you.” Your voice is soft, for a moment, your eyes flick away from his. Too overwhelmed by everything that is about to change to look him in the eye, to see the love and adoration that waited there. You didn’t want to cry, not yet.
Nanami raises his eyebrow slightly, drying his hands off on the towel hanging in front of the sink before they find their way around your waist. Sitting comfortably on your hips underneath the blanket, you giggle and squirm at his cold hands touching the warm skin underneath your top, his own chuckle reverberating in the space.
“Well, it must be important if it couldn’t wait until after coffee.” He teases, a small smirk on his lips. You hold back the urge to roll your eyes, settling on shaking your head at him before getting back on track. Taking a deep breath as your heart pounds in your chest, the reality of the situation weighs on you.
You will your hands to stop trembling as you reveal the wrapped box you were hiding behind your back. The faux surprise flashes visibly across Nanami’s face, if only to appease you. His eyes flick to yours for approval, his hands hovering and not simply snatching it. You take another steadying breath, knowing it’s now or never.
“It’s not necessarily a Christmas gift, it was uh..” You chuckle nervously, forcing yourself to continue through the over-practiced speech. “It was a surprise, even for me.” You say the last part more under your breath, placing the gift into Nanami’s waiting hands. He holds it for a second, and you can tell your words are processing in his mind. For a moment, he stares at the box, an awed sort of silence filling the space between them. You can feel the tears pricking at your eyes, blinking rapidly in hopes of quelling them so he can at least open it first.
Nanami’s fingers shakily peel back the wrapper, his movements so slow and gentle. As if the present was made of glass, any wrong move and it could shatter.
The more of the paper he peels back, the more the present is revealed to his waiting eyes. Inside the wrapping paper is a small black box, initially unassuming and not much bigger than Nanami’s palm. The box is longer than it is wide, not too unlike a box you’d find a necklace in.
But, this isn’t a necklace, no.
It feels like the seconds drag on for hours as he painstakingly pulls the top of the box open. Revealing inside, a positive pregnancy test. The plastic stick inside, the blue packaging striking against the black interior of the box. You hear the intake of breath from Nanami; you can feel the way the air stills as the present is revealed. The truth settles into his mind before his head slowly lifts up to yours.
Only to find you already crying, tears streaming down your cheeks, trying desperately to hold back your sniffles, not wanting to take Nanami away from his moment. The second he sees you crying, it’s like the spell in the air snaps, and he feels himself regain control over his body. You feel strong arms wrap around you, your face practically shoved into Nanami’s shoulder. With your ears against his chest, you can hear his own stuttering breaths. Your own arms are struggling to wrap themselves around his chest as quickly as possible, wanting to squeeze all the emotions you’ve been feeling for the past two weeks; this has been brewing in the back of your closet.
“You’re pregnant.” The words sit in the stunned silence, almost breathless in awe. A hysterical laugh leaves his lips as he untangles his arm from around you to run a hand through his hair. You take the chance to pull back from him, giving both of you space to just take everything in.
“How far along?” His words still take on the slow, breathy, awed quality they take when you don’t quite really believe something, but you so desperately want it to be real.
“8 and a half weeks today.” You whisper, never before speaking the baby’s existence out loud. You had decided that when you found out, standing in the bathroom staring at the positive result, all the excitement and fear that was bubbling in your chest. You had to be sure, you’ve heard too many horror stories of early miscarriages, not wanting to get anyone’s hopes up. But Nanami had to be the first person you told; it couldn’t be anyone else. You didn’t have a way to articulate why, but it was just the way you had wanted things to go. The way that felt right.
So, after that moment in the bathroom, you walk out, but not before tucking the positive pregnancy test into a little nook behind the medicine cabinet. You continued on this alone, as if you were, you called the doctors, set the appointment, and went by yourself. All it was was a simple blood test, no ultrasound or anything. You wanted the first time you saw your baby to be with Nanami; you couldn’t do that alone.
“I’m sorry I would’ve told you as soon as I found out, but I just, I wanted to be sure.” Truly, you are. You hated keeping something like this from him. Even if you weren’t lying, you weren’t being honest, and it was beginning to eat at you. Wanting nothing more than to fall into your boyfriend’s loving embrace, let him rub your tummy and bring you snacks. But the lack of certainty scared you; it stopped you until the blood test soothed it. At least, for now, the further anxieties brewing in the back of your head, waiting for the first ultrasound before releasing their wrath.
Nanami simply shakes his head, leaning down to place a gentle kiss on your forehead before pressing his against yours. This close, you can see the way the dim kitchen light reflects on the tears building in his eyes, bouncing off the droplets that hang onto his lashes.
“You’re perfect. I-” he huffs a laugh, another one that sounds a little too far from humor and too close to hysteria. “I can’t believe it.” His lips split into a smile, almost like he couldn’t help it even if he tried.
The energy feels infectious as a matching smile spreads on your own face. Feeling the giddy excitement you had been fighting back slowly began slipping through the cracks. “We are gonna be parents.” Your voice is breathless in shock, trying to just breathe everything in, trying to figure out when everything is going to start feeling real.
Nanami lets out a breath that you get the feeling he had been holding in for a while, if the way his shoulders sink with the release is anything to go by. His forehead clunks against your shoulder, and you giggle at his antics. Your hands come up to tangle your fingers through his hair, turning your head to leave a gentle kiss on his hairline.
He lifts his head after a few moments; it was calming. Sitting in the ambience of the early morning, just feeling Nanami’s breathing fan out against your skin. He blinks at you, his lips stretching into a blinding smile. A lot more…teeth than you're used to with Nanami. But no alarm bells go off, so you patiently wait for the explanation you know will follow.
“I also have something for you.” The words spark something in your chest, and you can feel it click in your mind. The realization pouring over you like cold water, the shot of adrenaline you feel zapping down your spine, forcing you to gasp. Your eyes widen like saucers as they connect with Nanami’s.
“It’s not what I think it is, is it?” You don’t even get to finish your sentence before Nanami is already moving. His hand wraps around your wrist gently before tugging you around behind him. You are tripping over yourself to get to the bedroom quicker, and Nanami barely holds back laughs at your bursting excitement.
He goes to the back of his closet, and you almost burst out laughing. But the laughter dies quickly when you catch sight of the sleek velvet box in his hand. The tears you had thought you had gotten over returned full force, and it’s useless to try and stop them. Your hands go to cover your mouth, the tears dripping down over your fingers.
You aren’t dressed, the blanket hanging on for dear life, falling off of one of your shoulders, dragging helplessly behind you. Your tank top is still crooked from sleep, and you don’t even think you have pants on. Nanami is in a plain white t-shirt with a few faded stains and some standard black sweat pants. Not the proposal attire you had imaged as a little girl.
But when you see Nanami down on one knee in front of you. The engagement ring sits snug in the box, the diamond glittering in the small slits of sunlight that are still peeking through the windows. Everything else just fades into background noise.
“This surely can’t be what you had planned.” You laugh tearily, his own laugh a little wet as he hands you a tissue from one of your bedside tables. You mumble a thank you and start wiping your eyes.
“No, it’s not quite what I had in mind, but I think it’s perfect.” His smile is soft, warm in the way it always is when he smiles at you. You can’t help the way your own smile reflects on your face, your hand shaking as you push it forward for him to take. Watching with bated breath as he slides the ring on your ring finger, bowing his head to give your knuckles a gentle kiss before he stands.
But you don’t even let him get fully on his feet before tackling him with a hug. Your arms wrapped tightly around his neck, your face shoved in the crease above his shoulder. Your blubbering tears are smearing onto the skin of his neck. Nanami stumbles backwards with the surprise new weight, before quickly centering himself, tucking his arms underneath your legs, and lifting you off your feet.
Time blurs a bit as the day continues, your mind still trying to process the morning and continuing to skip and repeat things like a broken record. You feel here, but not really. At some point, when you look around and actually can recognize the world around you. You see that you're on the couch, the TV is playing quietly in the background. The sun is high in the sky, though its light is mostly blocked by the now closed blinds.
You feel the familiar weight and warmth of a body tucked beside you, your clearly curled around him. Both of you tucked impossibly close on the small couch, somehow managing to fit comfortably. Blinking upwards, you see Nanami peacefully sleeping above you. His glasses skewed on his face, and a book was propped open on his chest.
You snicker to yourself, thinking, “Yeah, he’s going to be the best dad.”
