shane effortlessly defying ilya's internal self deprecation with the most blunt, heartstopping, to the point sincerity is such an important part of their dynamic to me

"because you like to be bad." "hey, that's not what this is. you and me. maybe it was at first but, not now, and not for a long time."

to the point where it even usurps other peoples interpretations of ilya before he gets the chance to internalize them -

"but, you hate him." "no. i mean, i get that. but no. i love him."

and ilya has that exact same subtly gobsmacked expression every time he does it

i think that after they get married and have a joint bank account ilya starts sending shane requests for insane sums of money. like shane will get a cash app notification of ilya asking for 1,000 dollars and the message will just say something like "bigmac ❤️🍔😄" and shane will reply with "that's literally OUR money" but then sends him maybe 10 bucks so ilya can live out his sugar baby dreams

My favorite headcanon i have picked up from elsewhere is that shane knows how to fix things in his house. If the sink isn't draining, he can absolutely get under there and fix it. He doesn't always have the time, so he does still call people for things, but he does have the skill to do all of these things. And lowkey its very good for his mental health to have a small problem he can fix and see immediate results for. He has never felt more free and uninhibited than just after he snakes his shower drain and the water runs smooth again.

I was personally the kid that was following my dad around everywhere when he tried to fix stuff, put together furniture, hang a paining, etc. I loved using the stud finder, the little level thing, paint rollers, etc. Like grown up arts and crafts meets legos. Clear instructions, challenging but not impossible, feeling fulfilled when its done.

Thats all right up shanes alley. Plus with all his question? Kid shane was like "Okay dad, why does the pipe have a bend? Is the water stuck cuz the bendy pipe? Whats stuck in there? Can we get it out? How do we get it out? Can I hold the bucket? Can i do the wrench?" He was not a super verbal kid, except when his dad was fixing things around the house and then he was CHATTY. And Yuna and david absolutely encouraged it because it helped him practice being social, asking for what he needed, he was always much calmer after and would nap really well.

And i think he really got into architecture because of that too. Its his own personal puzzle. he gets to know how everything works. he was asking the builders 800 questions every time he got to come to the worksite. He was chatting tools with them. "Is this something they sell commercially? Like could I have one in my garage? What brand is that?" and he was also talking material "Okay so why is this better than wood? Wouldn't it be more cost effective? oh its a fire hazard? Whats the likelihood of a fire happening? So if the electrical runs here, does that mean i cant renovate this wall if I want to change something later?"

He also ordered the whole team lunch while they were there.

And so i just think that when Shane and Ilya are living together, and the garbage disposal gets broken (because Ilya is incredibly ambitious with what he puts down that thing), shane whips off to the hardware store and comes back with a new disposal and just installs it that afternoon. And ilya freaks him about it bellboy style obviously.

And then they have a very serious chat about what can and can't go into the garbage disposal.

I saw your tags on my post and I would really like to hear more about your “Hayden is Shane’s Alexei” agenda…

Thank you so much for the ask! This is something I'm extremely normal about!

Okay this concept was born out of discussions with @rotzaprachim about the costs incurred by kids aiming for pro hockey throughout their childhoods and the real possibility that Hayden's still carrying debt from this as well as the sheer cost of raising 4 children on one salary no matter how large. Even with the NHL contract there's no way Hayden is making even remotely as much as Shane is. And Shane has to be aware of this fact and the fact that he's way more valuable to brands and to the metros than Hayden is and definitely has a guilt complex about the whole situation.

Like even without the financial element Hayden is already offloading so much childcare onto Shane. Making his children the responsibility of his hockey player brother (in arms) who earns so much more than him and is ever so willing to support the family.

If we take all of that into consideration then maybe Hayden's inviting Shane to Disney summer vacations so that they can have someone to help with the kids and fund the nicer bits. Maybe he's forgetting the girls' coats so that Shane feels bad and starts keeping spares for them. Maybe he starts lamenting the expense of hockey school for Ruby and Shane uses his alumni status as an excuse to pay half the fees. If we give Hayden even the slightest bit of awareness all of this could even be intentional.

I think shane really likes watching mukbangs or like eat the menu videos bc he likes seeing people eat "things he cant have" and he can pretend hes eating them too
