This freshly eclosed Hemaris thysbe (Hummingbird Clearwing) still has the scales covering its entire wing. As soon as it flies, those scales will be knocked off revealing the see through part of the wings where this moth got its name. These day flying moths can be quite common on flowers this time of year and continuing on until September in the northeast.

Our backyard is very popular with Hemaris this year, apparently. I was lucky and able to get up close to this one. 🦋

Hummingbird Clearwing moth I have never seen a Hummingbird moth before I took this photo. Very much a highlight of my photo expedition to Patuxent Research Refuge. I was almost afraid to breathe as I didn’t want to scare it away.
