This is day 2 of our Australia trip! We rented a car when we arrived on day 1 to venture out of Sydney as we waited for the rest of our friends to arrive a day later. On this day, we visited the Hunter Valley Wine Region which is known for Semillon and Shiraz wines. This is an area that came as a surprise to me, not just because I’ve only heard of it recently, but Australia is somewhat absent from the international wine scene, especially when there is the Napa and Sonoma Valley Wine Regions, Burgundy and Bordeaux, and many others that easily overshadows this part of the wine making world. And, I’ve even read that most Australians have not even heard of the Hunter Valley Wine Region 🍇 The Hunter Valley vineyards are as grand as any other with inviting tasting salons. Asides from learning the type of wines produced here, but wineries consciously produce wine om small quantities which is the reason exports are minimal. Although, in TV shows such as the Wine Show (with Matthew Goode), Australia is being highlighted as a unique terroir. And in our exploration, I discovered that I love their wine 🍷

7.9.19 - Lostock Dam

Started the day by heading north along the M1, through Maitland where we continued north through Vacy & Gresford, arriving at Lostock Dam for lunch time. We had stopped at Vacy to buy some pies and drinks so we could eat by the water.

Work for the Lostock Dam commenced in 1969 and was completed in 1971, it is on the Paterson River, a tributary of the Hunter River and is approximately 65 kilometres from Maitland, NSW. The purpose of the dam was to store water after a drought between 1964-1966 and to develop rural productivity.

At 100% capacity the dam holds 20,220 mega litres of water and the surface area of the reservoir is 220 hectares. The catchment area is comprised of 277 km sq. The name of the dam comes from the town of the same name located 2 kilometres downstream.

After Lostock Dam we headed back towards Maitland where we did some geocaching and I shall post about that experience in the next post!
