Do you know the weirdest thing about having a lot of feelings about Jiang Cheng? It's not the utterly understandable yet tragically mistimed or misplaced anger that hurts the most. Not even the pain, the loneliness, the grief. What breaks me is seeing him SMILE. The little moments of joy and pride. The days where things went right, and you can trick yourself for a second into believing what could have been might be, this time around. I just want to see him happy one more time.

What gets me specifically is the way he starts crying with joy when he looks at his siblings. Also the way he starts crying with joy when he looks at the fantasy-memory of the way he wishes his family could have been. And the way his face crumples when he turns to Yanli right after she learns that Zixuan's been killed. A fictional man should not be so overwhelmed with love for what he will inevitably lose right in front of my salad, it's unjust.
