The class thing is deliberate, I think. That makes it only more painful that the gender thing almost certainly is not. (@chibisquirt)

Okay, not to derail that other post:

1. The class thing is definitely deliberate, since xianxia novels and all these terrible, terrible pseudohistorical c-dramas are mostly concerned with uuuuuh ~upper class society~ for lack of a better term. (Which I find endlessly funny since Mainland China is still supposed to be communist the last time I checked. But then, did they ever manage to get rid of class, honestly?) The whole MDZS/CQL narrative is inherently classist, prime example being Meng Yao, but like literally any other figure as well. The whole narrative would fall apart if people weren’t so obessed with class (and the power that comes with it).

2. I’m not really familiar with the current status of feminist discourse in China, I’m much more familiar with Japan, but uuuh it’s Not Really Good the last time I checked. There is a movement and a lot of really engaged activists, but at the same time many (female) activists speaking out about the status of women in society have had their voices actively suppressed, so... it comes to no surprise that fiction reflects that stance, deliberately or not. Also the constantly ongoing fight re: “we do not want Western Feminism (whatever that means, really) here, we are Different” which is Exhausting for a variety of reasons that I’m not going to go into because No.

I like bringing these issues up together because I’m still trying to figure out what the narrative is actually trying to tell us re: these two points. Obviously being born into a certain role in life can develop into a problem, particularly if you want things that are outside of your assigned circle of social mobility, but at least to me, it never seems like the narrative goes as far as criticising the structure itself, even though the narrative seems at least partially aware that it’s this structure that causes such massive conflict. ...but that would be too much social criticism, I guess. If I had to nail it down, I technically classify as an anarchist, I guess, so resistance to coercive structures is like my favourite topic, and a lot of people are Not Fans Of That.
