Smosh Reads Reddit Stories (June 21st, 2025) - Post 1
All questions in this post are rhetorical unless specified otherwise
I just watched the newest Smosh Reads Reddit Stories and I have a lot to say. (I'm not sure how many parts there will be but I'll write in the last one when it's the last one.)
I'll be honest: this post took me awhile to write because I'm so incredibly angry. This isn't one where I could watch the video and immediately post.
At the end of the first story, Damien [Haas] says he has never used Siri and he just looks at his phone. He then imitates someone asking Siri what time it is.
This is another great example of what I mean when I say disabled people can also be ableist.
The anon who told me about this ableism in this video told me Damien uses a mocking tone to imitate people using Siri. I can't hear how he said it because I'm deaf, but seeing how he changed his facial expression for that one line, he was definitely mocking.
Also, what about when someone loses their phone?
What about people who have whatever disability and can't look at their phone?
Now, there have been (and probably will be) people who argue "he didn't mean disabled people who can't look at their phones! He meant people who can and don't!" Except he didn't say that. At all. And disabled people are constantly told we can do something we say we can't, we're just lazy and unwilling. (Also, the ableism of the word "lazy" I'll talk about later.) You can't just look at someone and automatically know their capabilities. Just because you can do something doesn't mean everyone can.
In regards to him saying "I don't see the need for myself...": Great. You want a medal? You want applause for never having a handful of groceries or, again, being disabled and unable to look at your phone or whatever yourself?
The anon who told me about this also said they use a Siri alternative for accessibility. Some people also use Siri itself for accessibility.
In publicly expressing my anger with him, I've been accused of being ableist towards autistic people (mostly autistic men). Damien being autistic does not mean he doesn't know what he's saying and/or doing. Also, considering he's probably experienced ableism in his life, I personally would expect him to know better than to say and do that.
Thinking about it, I'm kind of shocked they kept this (and other things I'll talk about) in. I know ableism and outright hate against disabled people is still "normalized", but with all the mistakes Smosh makes, I would think they would become more careful and make sure their cast members are less offensive and hurtful.
This also shows me how important ableism Reddit Stories episodes would be (not just the occasional story here and there in episodes with a whole different theme - though those are good too). It would be so educational and enlightening. Inviting different disabled guests (cast, crew, people who don't work at Smosh) and talking to them about their disabilities would teach so much and probably open up more dialog and invite more conversations.

Imitate
Do we realise our echoes?
When someone copies our actions?
Or we mimic another person?
It happens often, I believe,
People together share phrases,
And gestures get reflected back.
But even beyond the obvious,
Imagine being with your family,
Then imagine your friends near,
Who you are shifts and changes,
Not completely different but rearranges.
We’re editing ourselves to fit company,
Imitating gestures where comfortable.
What a lovely sign of caring,
A wonderful imitation to demonstrate love.
Humanity is soft to each other,
Even in simple gesture.
