Jim tugged at the fabric, testing it with a frown. It wouldn’t tear easily–Starfleet uniforms were purposely designed not to. Instead, he produced a tiny pair of sharp scissors from the med kit and began cutting the material.

“Brand-new uniform, too,” Leonard muttered, his voice tight with pain. “Quartermaster’s gonna kill me.”

“Let’s hope we live long enough to give him the opportunity.” Jim peeled away the blue uniform jacket. Leonard gave a soft hiss as his torso was jostled. Next went the black tee underneath, and then Leonard was shivering in the cool evening air that leaked in through the shuttle’s busted front window. Jim winced at the damage as he surveyed Leonard’s chest. “Fuck, Len, these are going to need stitches.”

“Give me the autosuture,” Leonard said, but Jim already had the unit out and was firing it up.

“I’m trained in emergency field medicine, you realize,” Jim said in exasperation. “Now sit still.”

The gouges in his torso were deep, but not life-threatening. Jim pinched the skin on either side of each wound together before running the autosuture over it.

“Gonna scar, probably,” Jim said after some moments of silence. They didn’t have a functioning dermal regenerator with them.

“Like that ain’t never happened before,” Leonard said ruefully. “S’all right. Not like it could look any worse down there.”

Jim, lacking free hands, did the only thing he could–he leaned in and brushed his lips against the hard, pink knotted flesh that started under Leonard’s ribcage and ended by his shoulder. A thick worm of scar tissue from a long-ago wound, from those pre-Jim days that Leonard so rarely spoke about.

“You’re beautiful,” Jim murmured against the rough flesh, and Leonard sucked in a deep breath. He drew back and continued his careful sealing of Leonard’s wounds. “Besides, I like a rugged man.”

“Ah, I see. This makes me look rugged?”  

“And sexy as hell,” Jim said, matter-of-fact. He finished closing the last of the gashes and switched off the autosuture. He glanced at what he could see of the sky through the broken window. It was nearly sunset; they’d been here for hours already. Sighing, he pushed himself to his feet and offered a hand to Leonard. “Come on. Let’s try again to see if we can raise Enterprise. I’m not spending another night on this godforsaken planet if I can help it.”

Prompt comes from this meme and was sent to me by @marcceh. Disclaimer that it’s been a while since I’ve seen Star Trek: Into Darkness. (Also this is completely unedited and I apologize for how unpolished it is, but otherwise I’d never finish any of these ask box prompts). :)

He hates the way this place smells, because it smells like nothing. The air is noticeably odorless, Starfleet Medical trying far too hard to make sure it doesn’t smell like a hospital, thus calling more attention to itself in the process. Jim shifts on the bed, looking for and failing to find a comfortable position to sleep in. Not that he’s done any of that since waking from his two-week coma, and once again the thought crosses his mind: Is Khan’s blood doing this to me?

He can’t help but wonder about it with each sleepless night that passes. He feels fine each morning--not awake, per se, but alert and no worse for wear. He can hear conversations from down the corridor clear as day, and he wonders if this wing has particularly good acoustics, or if it’s the blood. And then there’s his sensitivity to smells, absent or not. Have his senses been heightened by the augmented human’s blood, or are the days spent in this hospital bed with nothing to do causing him to overanalyze the situation?

He sees precious little of Bones, and he’s not sure if he’s grateful for that or not. A little distraction would be a welcome relief, but Leonard is a member of his crew, half of whom are now dead, and they’re all he can think of when he looks at his lover. Under normal circumstances, he’d have welcomed a visit from any of the senior staff, would have put up with them seeing him like this just to take his mind off the thoughts racing around his brain, but they, too, would be reminders of his terrible blunder. And then there’s Pike, who three years ago Jim had visited in this same hospital, who would be at Jim’s side an instant if he asked--but Jim can’t ask that of him anymore, never will again.

The door opens, cutting through his thoughts, and it’s Leonard. Out of uniform, so he must be off-duty. He closes the door and engages the privacy lock, then draws the curtain around Jim’s bed.

“Hey, darlin’.” They kiss, briefly, and then Leonard draws back. “Saw on the vitals screen at the nurses’ station that you were still awake. Thought I’d check on you.”

“Still breathing,” Jim quips--or tries, but agony crosses Leonard’s features, and he’s instantly guilty. “Shit, Bones, I -”

“It’s fine.” Leonard covers Jim’s hands with his own. They’re warm against Jim’s chilled fingers. “Yes, you’re breathing and alive. I’ll take that any day. We’ll figure out this insomnia thing soon, I promise.”

“S’all right. Maybe I’m a vampire now.”

“Vampires do sleep,” Leonard points out.

“Damn it, and here I had a really good joke about sucking you -”

“You do realize that everything said in this room is closely monitored by the security office, right?” Leonard points out in exasperation. “They’re not taking any chances with high-ranking members of the fleet, not after - everything.”

It’s effective enough to kill the tentatively lighthearted mood, and Leonard knows it. He sighs, pulls up a chair, and takes Jim’s hand.

“How’re you feeling?” he asks quietly. “Honestly, Jim.”

“I’m fine.”

“Jim.”

“I hurt,” Jim says forcefully, which wasn’t what he meant to say at all, but it’s out now. He sighs. “I hurt, Len. How can I face them after this?”

“The crew doesn’t blame you.”

“They should,” Jim snaps, inexplicably angry. He closes his eyes and draws a deep breath. “Damn it, Bones, they should. I’m their captain.”

“That’s right,” Leonard says firmly. “You’re their captain. You, Jim, and no one else. They’ll follow you to hell and back.”

“One could argue that they already did.” Jim opens his eyes again, unaccountably fatigued, knowing that he can’t slip off into the welcoming oblivion of sleep. He glances at the clock. “When do you need to leave?”

Leonard’s hands tightens on his. “I’m not going to leave.”

“No?”

“No.” Leonard shakes his head. “I’ll stay as long as you need me to.”

Jim’s eyes burn suddenly. He blinks rapidly, trying to clear his vision.

“I’ll need you forever, Bones,” he whispers.

Leonard gets up from the chair so that he can lean over Jim and kiss him soundly.

“You have me forever, Jim.”

Oof. Okay, I know that I always answer The Fall of Gods for questions like this (or its sequel), because it is my favorite and also the one that was the most difficult for me to write. So! If I rule out Fall of Gods, then I would have to say that either Living Witness or Memory were hardest to write, but also are two of my favorites.

Okay, so, in pre-Voyager days, while Chakotay was in the Maquis, he and Lore crossed paths and sort of became hate-fuck-buddies-with-complicated-feelings and this is a scene of Chakotay waking up on Lore’s ship and really that’s the most succinct way I can describe this ridiculous ‘verse I’ve invented. :-P

7: What are you most proud of?

Welp, that’s a broad question! If we’re talking fics, then Fall of Gods or Age of Silver are probably the fics I’m most proud of (both Sherlock fics). If we’re talking all writing in general, well, I’m proud of this manuscript that I’m trying to get published :)
