HaDM Fundraiser for Gamers Outreach

Pop Art was an art movement in the 1950s and 60s that challenged traditional views on how art is valued. Artists incorporated elements of popular culture, mass media, and advertising into their work.

Creatives in this movement were largely making a statement against the elitism of traditional fine arts. They believed that the art world was disconnected from day to day life. By making "high art" (paintings, sculptures, etc) out of "low art" subjects (ads, comics, celebrities, etc), pop artists were challenging how the art world determined the value of art.

A deep irony to the movement is that even though it was born through a rejection of elitism, pop art is very marketable and has become highly sought after by wealthy collectors. A single piece from Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans series, for example, sold for over $9,000,000 USD in 2010.

I decided to paint the Hermitcraft REPO crew for Pop Art because REPO is trending at the time of this post. Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol were the artists I looked at for this. I drew a lot of inspiration particularly from Warhol's Shot Marilyns series.
