I truly despise The Last Jedi for the years of Star Wars isolation I subjected myself to, because I’m five pages into Inferno Squadron and this Iden Versio chick is all “TIE fighters are awesome, kriff the haters” and that is how I have now become fully invested in her character.

So already I’m a little dissatisfied by Inferno Squadron. In Lost Stars we begin with Thane and Ciena as kids in an Outer Rim world separated by class, but having dreams of more through the Imperial Academy and service. Going through the academy they make friends and when Death Star 1.0 goes boom they lose people. People we know. So that’s hardhitting.

By contrast, Inferno Squadron starts with Iden Versio all hopped up on the excitement of killing rebels and shocked when it goes boom. Without a connection to the Death Star, I find it difficult to really bond with the revenge frame that’s hanging here after. I’m open to changing my mind, but it seems really tell-y.
