True Detective fic recs - Authors edition
Today I present to you the holy trinity of True Detective fic, these ladies have given this fandom so much, from meta to fics and edits, all the way to great shitposts. They are talented as hell, amazing writers and in case that wasn’t enough, they’re also wonderful people. So, go check these guys out.
Man, where do I begin? Girl wrote the ultimate TD fic, her awesome, novel-lenght What We’ve Got, a fic that will fulfill all your domestic rednecks needs. Go read it, I’ll wait. Miss Hannah’s prose is beautiful and detailed and I’m always so envious of the imagery she’s capable of conjuring; when you start reading one of her stories you never want it to end.
Personal favourite: Lone Star
Marty’s grip on his gun wavers but comes back quick. “What the fuck?” he says, and doesn’t know if he’s ever asked that question in any purer sense of the phrase. “How the fuck did you—why’s there—why’s there a twelve-foot wide hole in my fucking yard?”
The man groans and rolls around onto his back, gritting his teeth as his head drops into the soft dirt. He closes his eyes against the sky when he answers. “I fell.”
The wonderful starfic, this story owns my soul, I’m not gonna lie. This has the pefect blend of fantasy and magic AND slowburn, it’ll make your heart ache but it will also make you laugh and it has a happy, perfectly sweet ending. I re-read this fic a lot and it never fails to make me feel better, no matter what.
I am always in absolute awe of Miss Jess’ writing, she’s great at character studies and her stories are so well-writen and deep and just so intelligent. Plus, she’s great at nailing the series’ brand of humour, every single line sounds like it’s straight out of the show. Also, she wrote the best Christmas story in the history of the whole universe.
Personal favourite: black mold
If it rains, the damage will probably spread.
I’m probably biased here since Miss Jess was kind enough to gift me this fic but I just love it so much. It’s re-imagining of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper with Rust Cohle in North Shore and it’s absolutely terrifying and fantastic. She never pulls any punches making these assholes suffer and I love her for it.
Miss Allie has a prodigious imagination and is just so good at building very intricate worlds. She has all these wonderful fantasy AUs so full of details and great twists; she always takes very complex ideas and makes them work beautifully. Make sure to check out her poems and short stories on her Rust x Marty blog.
Personal favourite: Beautiful Dreamer
Rust knows this isn't his life.
He knows it ain't purgatory, either, because it's too nice, too familiar, and Marty's there. Marty, younger than he ever knew him and in a beat cop uniform. He's just driving, wheeling slow around corners and singing to the country music on the radio.
Rust is in the passenger seat and he reaches over, tries to touch him, but his hand goes right through his shoulder. He tries it again with the same result. "Marty," he says, his voice ancient, a thousand years old and unrecognizable. "Can you see me?"
After Carcosa, Rust is left in a coma but soon realises he’s actually living inside Marty’s dreams. This is an amazing exploration of both characters’ minds, Miss Allie gives these two great bits of backstory and makes them explore an incredible, oneiric world. Plus she’s a master at making you tear the hell up but then delivering a happy ending.
