Trabalhando na Disney - Parte I - Como fazer pra trabalhar no lugar mais mágico do mundo?

Quem disse que trabalhar é absolutamente terrível em todas as hipóteses possíveis provavelmente não sabia que era possível trabalhar na maior companhia de entretenimento do mundo: a Walt Disney Company.

Todos os anos, centenas de brasileiros são selecionados para trabalhar no complexo de parques e resorts do Walt Disney World, na Florida. Eu fui uma dessas pessoas e vou contar, passo a passo, como eu fiz e te ajudar a fazer o mesmo!  ♡

O processo seletivo é feito pela STB, agência de intercâmbio, que tem um convênio com a Disney. A primeira etapa da seleção é feita com a Disney Division da STB, que te encaminha para os recrutadores internacionais da própria Disney.

Para começar a participar do processo seletivo, alguns requisitos são necessários:

Ter no mínimo 18 anos até a data de início do processo seletivo;

Ter inglês fluente;

Ser estudante universitário regularmente matriculado em curso de bacharelado presencial reconhecido pelo Ministério da Educação e Cultura (MEC) e com calendário acadêmico regular; 

Estar cursando entre o segundo e o último período acadêmico;

Ter disponibilidade para iniciar e completar o programa a partir de meados de novembro até o começo de março do ano seguinte;

Possuir condições financeiras para custear bilhete aéreo de ida e volta, seguro de saúde internacional exigido pela Disney, as primeiras duas semanas de acomodação, taxa assessement fee (valor revertido para conservação do condomínio, eventos etc) e despesas de visto;

Estar apto a morar com participantes do programa vindos de diferentes países e culturas; 

Ser extrovertido, alegre e flexível.

Para participar, você deve comparecer, obrigatoriamente, a uma palestra informativa para saber os detalhes do programa de trabalho, fazer uma entrevista com o pessoal da STB e esperar seu resultado para a próxima fase. Se aprovado aqui, você vai se cadastrar no sistema da Disney, fornecer alguns documentos e comparecer a uma entrevista em São Paulo. Essa segunda entrevista é a última e, se aprovado aqui, é só arrumar o visto, as malas e partir pro abraço do Mickey.

Em meados de abril, o site da STB disponibiliza um formulário de inscrição para as palestras e as cidades costumam a variar um pouco, mas São Paulo está sempre na lista, com pelo menos duas palestras diferentes de 500 vagas cada. A data é quase sempre no final de maio e início de junho. As senhas costumam a acabar em menos de meia hora, então é sempre bom se planejar para ficar apertando F5 e garantir a vaga.

Em 2016, eu tive muita má sorte e não consegui vaga para a palestra. Resolvi então esperar no local bem cedo na fila de espera, pois sempre tem desistentes e ausentes. Eu consegui entrar na primeira palestra e fiz a entrevista no mesmo dia.

Cada pessoa presente recebe uma data e horário para a entrevista, que varia dependendo de onde a pessoa é. Eu moro no Rio de Janeiro e por isso consegui a entrevista pro mesmo dia.

Essa primeira entrevista é feita com a STB, ou seja, com brasileiros, porém alguns detalhes são importantes:

A entrevista é toda em inglês (perguntas e respostas);

O candidato deve levar um currículo em inglês;

O traje é social;

A entrevista é feita com dois ou três candidatos ao mesmo tempo.

O resultado sai no final de junho e existem três tipos de status:

Aprovado: você vai fazer a entrevista com os recrutadores da Disney;

Reprovado: você não conseguiu dessa vez, mas não desista ainda;

Stand by (espera): você foi considerado qualificado, mas algumas pessoas se saíram melhor do que você. Existe a chance de te chamarem pra nova entrevista se algum aprovado desistir.

“I did the IDCP in WDW. Best parts. Free entry to the parks and made lots of good friends. Worst parts. I was threatened by guests on a daily basis, my leaders and coordinators at both locations barely cared about us, full/part timers would barely talk to us, I would work from 6pm until 1am almost every day, I worked during most of the housing events so I couldn't go, my leaders made people work during anxiety attacks, and after rent and taxes my pay checks were only around $100.”

One good quality: I’m always thinking about other people, making sure everyone’s feeling happy and included in everything!

One bad quality: I am both a clean-freak and a mess. Usually I am very tidy, and will do washing up in a few hours of cooking, however, when things happen and I get busy, I do have a tendency to become a bit of a mess. A contained mess.

Are you outgoing or quiet? Depends... I use to be quite shy and reserved, and still am when you first meet me. However, since doing YouTube, I have become more outgoing. 

Do you like hanging out with people or keeping to yourself? Depends. I like to read and have me time - however, I like adventures, even to the shops...

Favourite thing to do: Reading, watching Netflix, taking photos, making YouTube videos, playing Minecraft, getting dressed up!

First things first...

It is two in the morning in Melbourne, and instead of being asleep, like I should be, because I have things to do in the morning, I am eating hommus. Why am I eating hommus? It’s delicious. Why am I writing at two in the morning? 

I’ve been meaning to start blogging and/or vlogging about my Disney experience since the idea bloomed that by some miracle I would actually be accepted into the Cultural Exchange Program. I feel like I was pretty lucky during the whole process, as I applied (I think) in early July and heard back in August, and the interview went rather smoothly. I’ll talk more about these things in a later post. 

The other thing is, now that I’ve been accepted and I have my Visa and flights, there’s not much else for me to do. It’s early December, and I don’t leave until late January... - Cue my mother giving me a stern look. Or at least, she does every time I say this. My room is a pigsty. Apparently my brother is moving in temporarily so his room can be gutted and rearranged while I’m gone. If only I wasn’t always up at two in the morning... 

I probably should finish my snack and go to sleep. But first, introductions! 

My name is Belinda, if you haven’t guessed by the vlog title. People who know me in real life tend to call me Bel (different spellings depending on who you talk to, including Bill, and Bal, even though these things do not sound like Bel at all). I’m at La Trobe uni doing Creative Arts - basically, I want to entertain people. If I can act, perfect. If I can help create something funny, great! If I’m getting coffees for the people in the office... yeah, not so much... Speaking of which, in the coming days I’ll hopefully be setting up a YouTube account under the same name to act as a sister vlog. 

My program starts on January 23rd, 2017, and I’m working in Quick Service Food and Beverage. In case you’re wondering, I indicated that I was happy with just about any work they gave me, but most of my experience was already in hospitality. I’m hoping the experience will be more positive than some of my previous jobs. As for apartments, I’m hoping for a room in Chatham or Patterson. Everyone seems to want Commons, because of the washing machines being in the apartments, but I don’t think I’ll mind the communal laundry. One of the things most Australians don’t get to experience is going away to college and learning skills of independence and living entirely on our own steam. Usually if you do live on campus it’s because you live too far away to commute. (In Europe, you drive for an hour and you’re in another country. In some places in America, you drive for an hour and you’re in another state. In Australia, you drive for an hour and you’re an hour from where you were.) As for not wanting Vista, this is actually because it’s separate from the other complexes. I had a nightmare that I was the only Australian there and nobody wanted to know me! Bizarre, I know, but that’s how I am. 

I think that’s all I’m going to write for now, because I am really tired, but I’ll post this evening about the process.

Preparing for my program

There are a few things right off the bat that I need to get done before heading to Orlando for my program, nothing too big just yet. So far the important things are:

1.      Accepting my offer!! – I have formally done this, but not completely. I have accepted and paid my fees, however I still need to upload my proof of enrollment which I just picked up as well as my passport and a copy of my work Visa from my last program. I am just waiting now on my passport because I just ordered a new one, then I will be able to upload it!

2.      Find roommates – I am only thinking about this right away because I have some off the bat. I am living with my best friend from my last program (Steph), my amazing roommate from my last program (Victoria), Victoria’s long-time friend (Lisa) and my long-time friend from home (Katie). We want to live in Patterson or Commons in hopefully a triple occupancy apartment for 5!

3.      Research my role – I am trying to prepare myself for my role (character attendant) by learning what I will need Disney look wise and reading blogs from other attendants

4.      Get health insurance – although under my dad’s coverage I am covered in the US, I need to buy insurance from Disney to comply with the J-1 Visa requirements. This sucks because it sets me back financially, but oh well! Needs to be done.

5.      Book travel and accommodations – I plan on flying to Orlando with Katie on May 8th and we will stay in the holiday inn by Vista Way that night with Steph!

6.      GET EXCITED!!!!!! – this one is not hard at all and I have thoroughly accomplished this
