You know, I'm starting to suspect that some of the most ableist people I have ever and will ever meet are also neurodivergent themselves. They're people who have spent their entire lives believing that the only way to exist in society is to mask everything about themselves, and they are bitter when they see other neurodivergent people who can't or refuse to do the same. It's the classic mentality of: "What do you mean there were other options! I did it, so you have to do it too!!!"
Just to be clear: this is not an argument for "we were the villains the entire time!" No, these people are also victims and products of an abliest society. They were told there was only one way to survive, and they broke themselves in order to do just that: to survive. Non-masking individuals are a constant reminder that it didn't have to be that way, that what happened to them actually wasn't fair, but they've spent so much of their lives committed to the bit that it's difficult for them to be open to the possibility that it DOESN'T have to be that way. Not for themselves and not for others like them.
