Eternally Yours - Batman Eternal #3
Everything Old Is New Again
And oh yeah, at long last, issue #3 features the return from limbo of one Miss Stephanie Gertrude Brown!
To be completely honest, I hadn't been following Batman books issue-to-issue for quite a while before this series was announced, largely because of how Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain both got massively screwed over by editorial when the new status quo was established after Flashpoint. I am a bitter, grudge-holding man by nature, and Batgirl v3 was my favorite book starring my favorite character, and seeing all that get dumped in the trash for the sake of the same masturbatory Silver Age revanchism that had been gaining more and more ground at DC ever since they dragged Hal Jordan back from the grave was enough to strain my affection for the franchise to its absolute limit.
It wasn't even only the mainline books that this erasure happened in, either. Steph was originally supposed to appear in the Smallville continuation comic as that universe's Nightwing, but come publication, she'd been replaced with Barbara in that, too, on the grounds that Babs was "more iconic". Y'know, the iconic Nightwing, Barbara Gordon.
But! That was 2011, it is now 2014. The New 52 has at this point used up its momentum, and as many of those new readers the reboot was meant to capture that were ever going to stick around are settled in, which means there's money to be made in trying to win back some of the audience that was driven off. And so, Steph, with Cass about a year away. Her origin is a bit different from Post-Crisis, in that she starts the story not knowing about Arthur's criminal life until she walks in on a supervillain meeting in his kitchen.
Oh, also, not-Flass up there is now the Commissioner, and he's crooked as hell and working for the Roman. That old chestnut.

I HATE RENDERING HAIR FREE ME WTF AM I DOING 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
“The fact of our absolute, utter, complete dependence upon the earth is used by native teachers as apart of self-understanding. It is empirically obvious that we are not only children, sucking at our earth-mother's breast all of our lives, but that we are also mixed with, and part of, that which Europeans choose to call the environment. For us, truly, there are no ‘surroundings.’
I can lose my hands, and still live. I can lose my legs and still live. I can lose my eyes and still live. I can lose my hair, eyebrows, nose, arms and many other things and still live. But if I lose the air I die. If I lose the sun I die. If I lose the earth I die. If I lose the water I die. If I lose the plants and animals I die. All of these things are more a part of me, more essential to my every breath, than is my so-called body. What is my real body?
We are not autonomous, self-sufficient beings as European mythology teaches. Such ideas are based upon deductive logic derived from false assumptions. We are rooted, just like the trees. But our roots come out of our nose and mouth, like an umbilical cord, forever connected with the rest of the world. Our roots also extend out from our skin and from our other body cavities…
That which the tree exhales, I inhale. That which I exhale, the trees inhale. Together we form a circle. When I breathe I am breathing the breath of billions of now-departed trees and plants. When trees and plants breathe they are breathing the breath of billions of now-departed humans, animals, and other peoples…
I live in a universe. I am a point of awareness, a circle of consciousness, in the midst of a series of circles. One circle is that which we call the body. It is a universe itself, full of millions of little living creatures living their own separate but co-dependent lives. They live, fight, make love, split, and die independent of my consciousness, most of the time. If some of them get disturbed or get hurt they might tell me about it so that I can help them, so that I can get them some food, or scratch them, or get rid of their left-overs.
Another circle is al of the other things which I am completely dependent upon - Gishux, the sun, the air, the water, and so on. Another circle is all of the things that fill my consciousness - the things I see, smell, hear, and so on. Another circle is the source of my dreams, consciousness, insights, gifts or powers, ideas, and ‘intuitions.’
But all of these ‘circles’ are not really separate - they are all mutually dependent upon each other, they are all mixed up with each other, they all overlap and move in, and out, of each other…”

Religion is, in reality, living. Our religion is not what we profess, or what we say, or what we proclaim; our religion is what we do, what we desire, what we seek, what we dream about, what we fantasize, what we think - all these things - twenty-four hours a day. One’s religion, then, is ones life, not merely the ideal life but the life as it is actually lived. All that we do, and are, is our religion.
