What, exactly, happened during the siege of Opal City, the so-called "Grand Guignol" as the Opal City Mirror called it?
The Battle of Opal City or known under the fancier title of "The Grand Guignol" (something to do with an old Parisian theater, don't look at me my favorite musical is Annie) was an event that was both the apex and the climax of Jack Knight's short lived career as Starman. As well as closing the book on the life of his father, the original Starman, Ted Knight. And leading to the death of Starman's wartime nemesis, the original Mist. It was a VERY violent and uncertain few hours for those of us who DIDN'T live in The Gemstone City and I'm sure it was even worse for those who had to shelter in place inside it.
But like any time Opal came under threat, the people placed their trust in the bearer of a Star and were shown just how right they were to do it.
(A picture taken of Opal's old town right after the final battle. Described by the accompanying newspaper as "An eerie but triumphant calm of peace returned and wounds yet uncounted". News of Ted Knight's death would only reach the public several hours after this photograph was taken)
While the Mist would be the final villain of the piece, it actually began with The Shade. A villain who is seen in at least more of a mixed light in Opal City. He had long since fallen in love with the city's exotic and eccentric style (often compared to the comic strip Little Nemo) where those with outlandish architectural and artistic ideas were allowed to run wild. While he spent much of his original villainous career mildly terrorizing cities like Central and Keystone in the Midwest, his beloved Opal was under his constant, vigilant protection. While this didn't fool many into thinking he was actually a benign man it DID make him someone that the institutions of Opel didn't feel like messing with. He could always go get arrested somewhere else.
Due to arcane circumstances as yet opaque to us, his body and mind were overtaken by a mystic named Simon Culp. Using the Shade's control of shadow energy and powered by the unquiet spirit of Jon Valor, the Black Pirate, he snapped a dome of darkness upon the city. While of course forces like the Justice League scrambled almost instantly in response none were able to push past the barrier. The best they could do was evacuate the city suburbs and pray their number still inside the city could pull off a miracle.
A miracle indeed was struck. While Jack Knight distracted the Culp-Shade and the villainous cadre he had assembled alongside his own heroic allies, the proverbial young was yanked out of the plan simply. The beloved detective trio of Elongated Man, Sue Dibny and Hamilton Drew SOLVED the murder of the Black Pirate. Thus unshackled from his anchor on the mortal plane, his unquiet spirit moved on to its place of eternal rest. The shadow dome faltered and Simon Culp only failed to see the assembled heroes putting his poor man's Injustice Gang in the dirt because the Mist stabbed him in the back.
After making a deal with the demonic Neron to cure his Alzheimers long enough for one last destructive plot, he planned to detonate a nuclear bomb in the city center. His mad ranting was interrupted, as it had ever been, by Ted Knight. Appearing for once and for all in his original Starman gear and lifting the bomb and the Mist high into the night where they harmlessly exploded. Ted Knight, a man who had spent decades writhing in guilt about his part in the Manhattan project was able to see justice done. Stopping his nemesis from harming anyone else AND taking at least one of the weapons he made possible off the board without undue casualties.
The city was struck with that odd combination of celebration and mourning. Their heroes had stood up against the dark and come out victorious. The older of the two having faced death with his boots on and his eyes open. The younger feeling that his payment to his legacy was long since paid in full and so vanishing into a life of comfortable semi-obscurity where he now remains. It was a final, violent break from the past that Opal City has still yet to fully reckon with. Only that stepping into that uncertain future is possible because they placed their trust in the Stars.
Jack...🤭
