The worst mistake ouat made as the show went on was the changes it made to James’ backstory and character.
At first, at least to me, James was more of a tragic hero than a villain. He and David have essentially the same, if not very similar, traits (arrogance, bravery, hubris) - the good and the bad.
The interesting part is that one of the only real differences is the way they were raised. David’s positive traits were told to him as such and those were uplifted and praised. James was raised in the opposite way, having his negative traits praised as positive ones by his father and having his more positive traits be somewhat shunned.
The show starts to bend over backwards trying to tell you that James and David are fundamentally different, that David is pure of heart and James is a villain. But, I always found James interesting BECAUSE he’s similar to David, because one flip of a coin made him a villain, because if fate had simply gone a different way he’d be a noble Shepard and David would be a corrupt prince.
THAT’S the tragedy of James’ character, and it was so perfect! James was always so interesting, but the more he showed up the more the show couldn’t decide what to do with him, and the more he was ruined. They go from “he has an evil heart, he would be evil no matter what” to “he didn’t want to kill things when he was a kid 🥺” Like????? Make up your mind or give us the infinitely superior characterisation he had in 1x06.
David: All right Dad, what's going on? You're on time, you brought a gift...
David: It's 6 o'clock and you don't smell like tequila.
Robert: What? I can't make a good impression?
James: No. That is why we're confused.

I would have liked to haves known more about Tiana's father. Like his name for starters. And more about the war he was involved in.
How are you going to create a compelling character, a war hero who won the heart of a queen, who's legacy inspired his daughter to form a resistance, and not give him a name? I know his name is James in The Princess and the Frog. Did OUAT not want to have him mixed up with David's twin James? Pretty sure we would have been able to tell the difference.
And I want to know more about the war. Who the opposing sides? Eudora's kingdom and the King's kingdom? Was it Queen Eudora who awarded him the Firefly Ruby? Was that how they met and fell in love. "Her love made him a prince." (Tiana. 7x05. "Greenbacks") I'm assuming James became a prince when he married Eudora.
What about his history before the war? He inlisted as a cook, only to fight a platoon by himself and win? He must have had some previous fighting experience. What are the chances he'd just be able to pick up a sword and singlehandedly turn the tides of a war?
I'm just really intrigued by this character.

The way George is so obsessed with David is honestly my roman empire.
Like, he admits himself that he wanted David to fill the void left by James, and it seems that he can’t see to leave that hope behind.
Like, he says himself that “death is too good” for David, is that really because he wants to torture him while he’s alive or because he can’t bring himself to kill his son for the second time? He tried to kill him with the guillotine but would he have regretted that later? Would he have actually been able to live with seeing an exact copy of his own son’s severed head lying on the ground??
No matter what, George never kills him. He threatens him, tortures him with grief, does anything he can to make his life miserable, all under the impression that David has ruined his chances of having a family again. It’s this weird codependent obsession with him that never seems to go away.
