A grumpy blind tom, a pale brownish/red, a lanky, small and surprisingly sleek furred for a ThunderClan cat. A gray cat with a quick and clever mind suiting him well as a Craftscat coming up with various clever inventions that've helped the development of clan society.
Being blind, Jayflight always feels he has something to prove. He comes to the realization that he could be a great craftscat as being blind gave him a new perspective.
His clanmates are quick to adopt everything he invents cementing him as an amazing craftscat.
When the truth of his parentage was revealed (the three were apprentices) and it was explained why it was that way, he went to Firestar and requested that his name be Jayflight in honor of the cat who raised him and to reassure Squirrelflight he still loves her.
Fun fact about AUs, you can put in as many of your own HCs as you want.
So I always believed that for the most part, a cat is chosen to be a medicine cat because of their own unique connection to Starclan. And canon sort of supports that, Yellowfang was pulled from her warrior duties because of her empathy for injuries, Goosefeather could see the dead and heard all of the prophecies at once (Kind of makes me wish Goosefeather had his own six book series, what was the point in giving him all that power and not do anything with it?).
Not all medicine cats have powers, some have a natural affinity for herbs and their uses, sometimes without being taught. Others started out noticing the small signs from starclan that would point to them being a Reader of Omens.
A personal HC of mine is that the power Leafpool has that connects her to her sister actually depends on distance. Leafkit started out with an affinity for herbs like many other medicine cats do, but her power kicked into gear when Squirrelpaw left on the journey with Brambleclaw and the others. It settled down when she came back but picked up twice more, when Leafpool left with Crowfeather and again when Squirrel and Bramble took the three to the mountains.
So where am I going with this?
In the Loner!Jayfeather AU (In which not once is Jay actually called Jayfeather), Lionpaw is the one who switches with Hollypaw as the new medicine cat apprentice. I thought about it and how warriors are all about being the strongest, and I had to ask what would have to happen for the warriors to allow this beefy apprentice who has never lost a fight to become a peacekeeping medicine cat?
All medicine cats have a starclan mentor, whom Iâm sure share the history of the clans with. Leafpool is aware that seasons and seasons ago, Thunderclan led an attack on Windclan to destroy their medicine supplies and that Windclan was lucky to have a medicine cat who had complete warrior training that could defend his den and herbs.
Maybe, Starclan gifted this apprentice with the fierce skills of a warrior so that as a medicine cat, he could defend his clan just as easily while also healing them. Maybe Lionpawâs powers were an omen that there would be many seasons of battle in their future, and that they needed a warrior who could heal just as well as they could fight so that they might survive it.
Lionpaw sees the Power of Three prophecy as well but he dismisses it, because he only has one sibling so it couldnât possibly be them, theyâre only two cats after all. But he does keep an eye out, maybe Cloudtail and Brightheart will have a litter soon that he will have to guide through this prophecy. Or maybe Squirrelflight is expecting another litter!
Lion does ask Squirrel and Leaf is it was possible that he had another littermate, maybe one who passed away, he doesnât really believe that heâs part of the three, but thereâs this scary looking bald cat who keeps showing up in his dreams with a weird stick telling him about the Prophecy of Fireâs Kin.Â
Boy did Squirrel and Leaf start sweating bullets when he asked that question though, they tell him the truth (sort of). He and Holly did have a littermate who they lost at birth, they gave him the name Jayflight for his journey to Starclan. Not a complete lie, and it satisfies Lionflowerâs curiosity for the time being, though he does take a week to grieve for his brother. And it certainly interests Rock when he hears about Jayflight, Rock goes to Midnight to inform her and she tells him that she has already met the little Jay. Who may as well be deaf instead of blind, for he refuses to listen to any guidance she has to offer.
And the bit where Jayfeather got rid of the stick because he was pissed with Rock? Yeah Lionflower breaks the stick because Rock kept trying to convince him that his dead brother is alive and wanders the world in search of his real home.
Note:Â I do not mean that Jayflight is searching for Thunderclan because of his mother, Jayflight does not believe he has any blood ties to the clans, nor do those ties keep him with the clans after the battle. Like Tree, Jayflight is searching for a place he can call home, among cats who will care for him as much as he does them, but will also not pity him simply because he is blind, he wants to be with cats who can see past that and acknowledge his capabilities.
He doesnât find that in Thunderclan, not at first, which is why he leaves again after the Dark Forest battle, he believed that he wasnât meant to stay with the clans, I may end up making him a permanent Skyclan cat, they were the first to welcome him and didnât care that he was blind, though Shadowclan might be interesting as well, because that would pair him with Shadowsight.
Second Note: I was thinking that the place Jayflight ends up in after the battle should be the Twolegplace that Dovewing and Tigerheart go to, I think that he and Spire would really get along, plus it puts him away from the clans during the Darktail problem.
Last Note: I want Hollyleaf to have a power in this AU, a popular one for her is Suggestion, her speaking skills can convince cats to do something they wouldnât otherwise do. But Iâve kinda melded that with Jayflightâs power, so I was thinking for her it could be truth? Catâs cannot lie around her, or at the very least they cannot lie when she asks them a direct question.
Leafpool isnât lying when she tells Holly that she cares for her and Lion as if they were her own, and Squirrelflight certainly isnât lying when she calls them her kits, because they are at this point. Squirrelflight loves them as a mother would because she is their mother, in all but the actual birthing process.
Cats would have no choice but to speak the truth that they know, even if it isnât the actual truth. Brambleclaw doesnât know that he isnât their actual father, but he thinks he is so therefore it is the truth that he knows. Make sense? Lemme know what you guys think about all this, see you soon!
Breezepaw/pelt and Jaypaw/flight, they're ok brothers who will take over this clan together. Also nice idea for the po4 au, Breeze is actually a pretty good brother who helped Jay in learning how to deal whith being a blind warrior.
Itâs a Jayflight with all his scars fixed with gold. Itâs based on the idea of Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. The text is âJayflightâ in Japanese.
