You walked into the house, expecting your boyfriend to be sitting on the couch when you got home from work. Instead of finding him, though, you found a sticky note on the counter where you usually set your keys.

His handwriting scrawled across the tiny piece of paper like he was in a hurry when he wrote it. It read:

Baby,

I’m gonna be working late but I want you to know that I love you. I’ll be home when I can. Please don’t wait up for me.

All my love, always,

You sighed and put the note in your wallet, folding it carefully and putting it with all the other ones he’d written. This was the fourth night this week he’d been absent, and you were starting to worry.

You went about your business, made dinner and cleaned up after yourself, just like any other day. After dinner, you showered and pulled on your pajamas, taking your time brushing your hair. You settled into bed and curled up with your favorite book and turned on your lamp, and eventually drifted off to sleep.

You woke to Jaebum climbing into bed, and you rolled over, glancing at your phone. It was midnight, and he was just now coming home. You rolled your eyes, immediately annoyed that he was so late. The fact that you’d been alone all night was adding fuel to the fire. You rolled over to face him.

“Hi, baby,” he said quietly, “how was your night?”

Anger flooded through your veins, but you ignored it, trying to keep calm. “It was okay. I really missed you.”

“ I’m sorry, babe. I missed you, too, though. I had to work,” he said, eyes softening. He kissed your cheek and you sighed, trying hard to understand.

“Well, you’re home now, and that’s what matters,” you said, stuffing your feelings to the bottom of the metaphorical pile in your head.

“Exactly,” Jaebum said with a smile, and opened his arms, holding them out for you. You buried your face into his chest, realizing with relief that he smelled like his own cologne instead of some random bimbo. You knew it was stupid, but you couldn’t help but wonder. As he stroked your hair, you thought you’d do some digging, and resolved to text Jackson after your boyfriend had fallen asleep.

Jb had to work late, you keyed. Did you guys stay tonight?

Negatory.

Fuck, you keyed back. You knew that he wouldn’t stay to practice by himself. Any ideas where he went?

Another negatory. Sorry sis.

Do you think he’s cheating?

Hell no. He’s obsessed with you. You’re literally like, all he ever talks about.

You sighed, trying to reason with your anxiety as it nearly overtook you. You inhaled deeply, and texted Jackson back. I sure as hell hope so. Night, bud.

You threw your phone to the other side of the room, hoping that tomorrow would be better.

Jaebum’s hand threaded through your unbrushed mane of hair, trying to pull through the tangles as gently as he could without waking you. You squeaked and opened your eyes, your boyfriend’s swollen, makeup-less face less than a yard from yours.

“Ow,” you said, rubbing your head as he smiled at you.

“Good morning, beautiful,” he said in a singsong voice, still half-full of sleep. “I have the day off, and you know what that means, don’t you?”

You shrugged as best you could with one shoulder pressed into the bed, smiling.

“It means we’re going out,” he said, patting your face with the same hand he used to comb through your hair. “I want you to get all dolled up so I can show you off,” he grinned.

You groaned. The thought of getting ready and facing the day was overwhelming, but on your boyfriend’s insistence, you got out of bed and jumped in the shower.

Jaebum had dragged you to Walmart for grocery shopping, back to the house to put all of it away, and then had insisted that you go back out.

You found yourself sitting on a park bench that you’d carved both your initials in the year you’d started dating. The sun had shone on his jet-black hair as he’d wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into him. You recalled vividly the look on his face as you’d taken his pocket knife out and driven it into the wood. It was a mix of shock and pure childlike ecstasy, his lips tugging upward at the thought of this new person in his life becoming permanent. He’d kissed you harder than he ever had after you’d finished carving, and you hadn’t understood why. “It’s just our initials,” you’d said, blushing. Okay, so maybe you’d liked him more than you’d have admitted out loud.

He’d chuckled and kissed you gently again, his mouth so utterly soft that it had driven you insane. “Not to me,” he’d said, wrapping his hand around yours and leading you to the crepe shop across the street.

That was three years ago, from your first real date as an official couple. Jaebum now stood behind the bench, holding your hand in one of his, his phone in the other. He was texting someone, but he wouldn’t let you look at his screen.

This can only mean one thing, you’d thought to yourself, your stomach dropping to your toes. He’s gonna fucking break up with me.

Jaebum took your hand after putting his phone back into his pocket, leading you into the cute little crepe restaurant across the street from the park. The inside was exactly as you remembered it-- nothing had changed in all the time that you’d been with Jb. He walked up to the counter, telling the clerk that he’d have two of the specials, and then whispered something to her that you couldn’t hear.

He took his receipt from her, and sat down with you at the booth next to the greenery-covered window. “Y/N,” he said, finding your hand with his own. You braced yourself, preparing for the worst when Jackson, Mark and Bambam all emerged from the back room. Jinyoung and Yugyeom turned from their places at the booth next to yours and Youngjae came up to you with a bouquet of roses, pulling you to your feet.

“You look so beautiful, Y/N-ah!” Youngjae cooed, holding onto your hand while the other boys surrounded you. You turned around to find Jaebum on one knee, a little velvet-covered box in his hand. Youngjae put your left hand in your boyfriend’s and stepped back, a hush falling over the cafe.

“Y/N,” Jaebum said, voice clear and strong but somehow simultaneously hushed, “my grandparents fell in love on that bench across the street, and my parents fell in love in this crepe shop. I fell in love with you in both places. I fell in love with the way you sing like no one is listening, every single time, even if you’re in a crowded room. I fell in love with the way that you don’t like bean sprouts, and the fact that you still eat them every time I put them in your stir fry. But most of all, I fell in love with you in this place, three years ago to the day. Will you make me the happiest man in the world, baby? Will you marry me?”

The hand that was free had flown to cover your mouth and tears filled your eyes. He was so sweet, so thoughtful. Your heart swelled with emotions and you nodded vigorously, pulling Jb to his feet. “Yes! Yes, of course I will! A thousand times yes!” you were practically yelling, and he slipped the ring onto your shaking finger. You held it out to admire it, and he stared at you, seemingly in shock. “It’s beautiful,” you said, pulling him down by the back of his neck to kiss him as fervently as you could.

“I always told myself I was gonna marry you,” he said when you finally broke the kiss.  

“I knew you were the one the second you put your arms around me. You just feel like home,” you said, pulling him back in for another kiss.

“I love you (Y/N) I-” “No Jaebum I-” you stopped. Your own vocal chords tumbled into a mess. You couldn't speak, not even to your best friend of so many years. “(Y/N) I can't hold it back any longer, I have loved you ever since way back then,” he responded. His voice was clear, calm. It surprised you how he could remain completely composed at a time like this. Yet, you looked at his eyes and you couldn't deny the soft sadness that glazed the surface of his orbs. You scrunched up your eyes, not able to look at him. “You can't do this now,” you replied. Your voice barely edged above a whisper. You tried to be firm but every atom in your body wanted to crack and fall a part. When you looked up, your best friend still had his dark gaze locked on you. He was backed onto your apartment window. The silver moon outlined his lean body, making him appear like a ghostly silhouette in your flat. “Why are you telling me this now Jaebum? Of all the nights, of all the times you could have told me,” you almost yelled at him, He broke away from your pained eyes, the eyes he longed so much to look at him the same way you did at Jackson. He shook his head slowly. “ I don't know.”

The two of you had been friends since you were in kindergarten. Jaebum took you to the nurse's office one day when you had tripped on nothing and cut your knee. Since then, you were inseparable. Although you always heard the famous line “You guys should date”, you would both reply with a blunt 'no' every time. Yet, you felt your heart ache a little every time he said the words. You could only laugh in agreement. “Ew, I'd never date you” you'd retort, but of course you had to feel the complete opposite. You had to fall in love with your best friend, and you kicked yourself every time you heart went aflutter when you saw him. So, you painfully watched as Jaebum dated girl after girl after girl whilst they never took a true interest in him. They were just captivated by a handsome face, and it saddened you. You couldn't bare to see the dark twinkle in his eyes subdue after his heart had been broken. It made you love him that much more.

However after school and after he auditioned for JYP, your infatuation subsided. You continued to get on famously, you attended his shows and supported him just like you had in high school. You would playfully punch his shoulder and tell him how proud you were when you got the chance to see him. He invited you to visit him at his dorm one day. You took a deep breath, steadied yourself to knock on the door, and then it swung open. You almost jumped 3 ft in the air, your heart almost falling out of your mouth. A voice gasped as you sprung back. “Yah Jackson what is it?” you could hear Jaebum's voice call out. You snapped into focus. “Oh god I am so sorry!” the man blurted out. His voice was gentle, like an idol's should, but a hint of panic still rung through the words that tumbled out. You met eyes. Suddenly, your racing heart starting doing circles as you blinked rapidly. You knew all idols were beautiful but wow. “(Y/N) is that you?” Jaebum called out again. That's when the man snapped out of it. “You're (Y/N)?” he asked suddenly. You nodded, a beam gracing your features. “Aish, he didn't tell me you'd be so cute,” he trailed off. You felt stupid, like you were in some romance drama, but your cheeks were on fire and you almost had to check yourself for a pulse. Him asking for your number, taking you out on a first date and your guys' first kiss was all a blur. Until, 2 years had passed and the charismatic idol you met at GOT7's dorm was on one knee.

“Im Jaebum I am getting married tomorrow,” you retorted. At this point, you didn't even know where to direct your disbelief and astonishment. “I know but-” “To the man I love, Jaebum. This isn't right.” You watched as his whole body tensed. He briskly ran his hand through his ebony locks, ruffling them out of place. He bit his lip. “I know,” he repeated even quieter than before. You collapsed onto the sofa nearby. You leaned back, barely able to contemplate the whole situation. A dangerous silence circled the both of you, like a hungry vulture, inspiring a feud that never should have happened; it awakened a personality in both of you that was completely foreign. “If you had told me this in high school,” you began quietly. You took a deep breath. “Things may have been different.” His eyes snapped up, searching you for a shred of infatuation left in you that he could cling onto. “This isn't high school anymore!” you muttered bitterly. “You can't make a random confession to someone then expect them to fall at your feet the next day.” Tears brimmed your eyes, glistening the orbs as you stared straight at him. It was as if the whole reality of the situation hit him. His whole posture dropped, his skin whitening and his lips hung slightly ajar. He shook his head at his own disbelief. He stammered, trying to utter something but only releasing a fragmented mess. All you could pick up was a mumbled “I'm sorry” before he desperately left the room. The door slammed, leaving behind a deafening silence that left your ears ringing.

You had expelled the night before from your thoughts. Any fear and doubt melted as soon as you saw Jackson's soft expression at the altar. His round eyes were already filling up with tears, the corners of his lips tugging into a bright smile. You knew you had married the man you loved. The ceremony, the venue and the dinner after were all beautifully planned. You couldn't have asked for anything better. Of course Jaebum was there, he was both of your best friends, and you tried to ignore his gaze throughout the whole day. You would occasionally feel his bold stare from the corner of your eye. Yet, you would just continue to smile and accept kind congratulations from the person in front of you. You just had to remind yourself that you were in love. Your whole heart beamed when he held your waist, his hand on top of yours, to cut the cake. The camera flashed, capturing the bliss radiating off the two faces in the frame. As the knife sunk into the pale sponge, he placed a sweet kiss on your cheek and you felt rejuvenated. Nothing could equal to it. You were sat at the long table, chatting to your parents beside you when you heard the clink of a glass. You spun your head round to meet the perpetrator of the noise. Your heart sunk. The best man's speech. Your new husband's expression was expectant, yet you were swimming in a deep pool of nerves. Jaebum cleared his throat.

“Wow, today I feel like a proud father letting his son go.” He begun, evoking a slight chuckle from the guests. He smiled. “But that aside, I am very happy to see the first member get married today. We all knew it would be Jackson, he's always been the family man,” he continued sincerely. You watched his expression cautiously as his lips began to form his next sentence. Suddenly, his eyes darted to meet yours. His grip on the microphone tightened. “And to (Y/N), my best friend since kindergarten, I couldn't imagine anyone better suited,” his voice softened. Only you could feel the underlying sadness behind his words. You felt Jackson's eyes drift to you, and you showed him a reassuring smile. “I'm no good with words, the couple beside me can vouch for that, so I'll keep this short,” he chuckled a little. He awkwardly scratched the back of his neck. “But Jackson you are one of us, one of my closest brothers and I wish you nothing but happiness in the future.” You found Jackson's hand under the table and gave it a squeeze; you knew he'd be tearing up by now. He turned to look at you, beaming warmly, and squeezed it back. “And you couldn't have picked a more beautiful and perfect person to share it with,” he met eyes with you again. He had an expression you'd never seen him have, it was nothing like the face of all those girls had played him in high school. It was distinct. It was a kind of despair you had never seen befall his features before. He snapped out of it, as if he had been in a trance. “So, if everybody could raise a toast to my two best friends: Mr and Mrs Wang.” After the dinner, you scoured for your best friend, Jackson's best man. There was no sign. Jackson, shook his head.

“He's so chic, who even leaves a wedding early?” he exclaimed. You knew it was a joke but you couldn't even imagine the sadness Jaebum was feeling right now. Even weeks after, you still didn't know whether he had left to make it easier for you or due to his own sadness. Although you spent the rest of the night with the other GOT7 members, you couldn't help but feel that the only member missing made all the difference.
