#Today's Prayer
Ask and You will Receive
Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. — John 16:24 | English Standard Version (ESV) The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. When God Answers 'No' to Our Prayers
Acts 16:30-33
King James Version
30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
General Superintendent David K. Bernard and Dr. David S. Norris, Professor of Biblical Theology at Urshan Graduate School of Theology, discuss biblical teachings about baptism in Jesus’ name, practical insights about baptism, and some recent scholarship on the topic.

Praying "More Earnestly"
Luke 22:44 KJVS "And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground." Here we find Jesus enduring the moment He was born for. He lived His life and finally met up with the day of His destiny designed for Him before the foundation of the world. If you truly love someone then reading that they endured something like this is heartbreaking and even more so when you begin to realize it was done for you. However it's not the context of calvary that I want to focus on in this passage. It's the prayer he prayed or more specifically the method in which he prayed this prayer. Earnestly is defined as intense and sincere conviction. I read in Luke 22:44 that Jesus prayed "more earnestly" and by the context of this passage we can withdraw that Jesus had moments when he did not pray AS earnestly. To pray more earnestly in one moment is as praying less earnestly in others. Now that is not to say that Jesus wasn't earnest in all of His prayers. I believe He was. I believe He was sincere in all of his conversations with the LORD. But I'm talking about the intensity of this prayer he prayed was much more sincere then that of let's say a more peaceful time in his life. This passage describes Jesus as being in agony and I think we can all agree that there have been agonizing moments in our walks with God in which we could testify to the fact that we prayed prays in relation to our agony in a more sincere or intense method. That is not to say that our prayer life has lacked in other moments or that we were in any backslidden condition but that what we were going through was so dramatic for us that we, more so than other times, desperately needed to touch God. We needed the Lord to intervene and work a miracle or healing in our situation. Therefore the quality of our prayer was much greater in that moment than in others. I was taught that when you get down to pray and you just can't focus on your prayer then you have two options. Either, one, get up and come back when you can get your mind on the Lord or two, press through and subject your flesh to prayer. I believe God respects both. There was a time in my life when I decided to give God everything. I was going to live for God. It was going to become my lifestyle and who I was. I gave up on the world and I shifted my desires and dreams toward the things of the Lord. I decided that I would allow God to define who I was. I made this decision during probably the hardest time in my young adult life. I was in emotional agony. I was in a lot of heartbreak turmoil and I needed the Lord to intervene. There was a point in my prayer when I had an epiphany. I decided right then that I was going to live for God even if He chose not to answer my prayer the way that I wanted it answered. I decided that If I can choose to live for God during this, than I would be able to live for Him through anything. So I gave my heart to God and I repented and the Holy Ghost fell in that room and that was it. A new fire lit inside me. It wasn't just a treasure in a field type of Holy Ghost it was a treasure AND A field type of Holy Ghost. (Matthew 13:44) But, It was long after I began to put 100% into my walk with God that there came a time when the focus, motivation, and general spiritual drive that I had at the beginning began to simmer down. I was pumped but there came a time when this passionate drive died down. When I realized this was happening I felt pretty bad. I felt like I was beginning to backslide even though I had no desire to live in the world I still didn't feel that passionate fire of living for God either. I sought my pastor and he helped me to understand this very important thing. God did not make us to feel that way all the time. We cannot always be spiritual. It is a gift that God gives us when He chooses to give it to us. This fire dies down sometimes and then it comes back when God feels like we need it. I believe that God does this to test our faithfulness. He wants to see if we will deny the flesh without the fuel of our righteous passions. He wants us to endure some things. This is the evidence of our love and dedication to God and His perfect will. Dont misunderstand me the fire didnt go out, it just died down a little. It didn't mean that my prayer life was flagging, it didn't mean I was backsliding or lukewarm. Sometimes God kind of steps back just to see how we will react; to see if we will be faithful, and sometimes I think he does it to see if we will seek that fire. If I don't feel like raising my hands will I still do it? If I don't feel like worshipping will I still do it? I'm not talking about being charismatic. I'm talking about giving something to God without an influence of receiving something in return. True love is unconditional. That means that true love gives without expecting ANYTHING in return. That type of love is extremely difficult to understand especially when it feels you give and give and never get anything In return. I'm encouraging you to keep giving and to take a closer look at the things you are receiving. If Jesus can have moments when he didn't feel as sincere and enthusiastic in His prayer life or walk with God than how much more can we? We get distracted. We're human. In fact I'm not even sure if half of you are paying attention to me right now. Lol So you see as humanity we get weary. We get tired. We can't always walk in the spirit because we are flesh. I'm not trying to sound as if I'm contradicting scripture. I believe in walking in the spirit like the Bible says. What I am saying is that we as humans are incapable of feeling spiritual at all times and God understands this because like we see in the passage we just read Jesus experienced this first hand. Jesus was not looking for an intervention. I don't believe he expected God to change His circumstances. After all he had the power to call down an army of angels and chose not to. To me that tells me that this earnest prayer in verse 44 was not for intervention but for strength to endure this trial in order to carry out Gods will as a sacrifice and our eternal encouraging demonstration. There will be trials we face that we are not meant to escape but that we are meant to endure. Prayer in these moments is not necessarily for intervention but for strength to make it through it with sanity and a Godly understanding at the end of it all. There have been circumstances In my life where I know that I would not have made it through with my sanity without the prayers that gave me the strength to endure them. Many of you can relate to this no doubt and if you can't then you just wait because your time is coming and I hope that some part of you remember this message when it does. I pray that you know in that moment to pray earnestly and get ahold of God. Remember God isn't expecting perfection in our sense of the word. His idea of perfection is someone who is consistent in striving for the mark. Pray earnestly and when you need to then pray more earnestly. Strive and maintain. -Caleb Deese
