🪞 How to See Faeries by Brian Froud and John Matthews

Stewards of Faerie, Brian Froud and John Matthews take you on an interactive tour of their world and how to better see, hear, touch, taste, and smell it. Their constant messages to listen and keep an open mind will surely have you seeing faeries by the end of the book.

This was such a creative book and I loved the classic art style of Brian Froud intermixed with John Matthews’s writing style. I felt every page, I took it slowly, and I kept my mind open. Surely, I will see them, I will be immersed in Faerie.

Happy whenever this finds you. For me it is April 24th and I am deep in trying to stay afloat. (And have no problems mixing themes in my language.) To get back into my practice on a deeper level I decided to return to a deck that has guided into the forest, through a cave and out the other side. The WildWood Tarot by Mark Ryan and John Matthews. I am feeling a desire for a stability that I have been missing. Maybe the bigger problem has been a lack of a driving goal. That is a story for another day. Today the thoughts as I drew the three cards were about stability and safety in a time of crisis. Before I get into it... this deck does not do reversals so even though cards were drawn that way I am reading them upright. Card 1: The Three of Stones: Creativity.

This is so clearly a card of connection. Yes, I see that it says it is CREATIVITY. But creativity comes from connection. To the earth, to our community, to our art, to ourselves. It is also a connection to the universal consciousness. A thing I have felt disconnected from for ages. This seems to me to be a pretty clear answer, connect to my spiritual roots, and use that to boost my creativity. Based on my past experiences, that will probably help in much bigger ways than I can anticipate. The second card: Six of Bows: Abundance

Here is where I get a little confused, but such is the nature of the cards. This card is about having come through the bulk of the growing season and having that harvest of abundance. I think we all know that come August our gardens are bursting and the Farmer's market is full and wonderful. I would hope that this is telling me I have been doing the gardening, the harvest is coming in and I am going to have abundance. My concern is that this is a card I did draw in reverse, so it maybe suggesting that I am needing to plant more, and wait some. Card Three: King of Vessels: Heron.

If you are new here you will not know of the Heron God. He comes to me in my deepest times of need. This is not a joke. I have ponds near my house and there are Herons there. But I only ever see them when I am there in need. Once, I went to the ponds asking how to stop someone from disrupting my life, the Heron appeared as I was in meditation and when I was looking at him... I just knew what to do. (And she has not disrupted me since!). He comes to calm me. In this context, he is about the things I believe in: fairness, honesty and honour. As a person, they may show me the way to the stability I crave, or challenge me in that concept in some way, they may also be a sponsor. All in all this is not a negative reading. More of a... you have a lot of work to do and you keep getting distracted reading. I will spend this week working on connecting with my guides, my gods, and my own soul. The small group gathered by the graveside. While John openly wept, his son Oliver knelt down to lay some flowers while his daughter Louise was comforted by her husband.

Little Amelia was a bit confused by the whole thing. "Mum, are we going home soon? We left Gunner all on his own."

"No we didn't, sweetie; we got a childminder for him. Let me just say goodbye to Grandma, okay? Then we're going to go back to Grandpa's house for a bit before we go home."

John turned and wiped his tears. "Yes, thank you everyone for coming. If you wish to join me at my house on the base for a brief celebration of Helen's life, I would be honoured to host you."

A member of the BJU community messaged WutBJU during this morning's Bible Conference service.

They said that John Matthews' ask directly contrasted everything they had been hearing all week:

I've asked Donna [Bixby of Jonathan's House] to come stand with me as we take the offering and if the ushers would please come down.

We're all fellow alumni, most of us in this room. And we have a chance to be a part of something very special, that one of our own is doing, and that's Donna Bixby. So far, we're right about 40,000.

We were at 38,500 last night … some more online donations.

There's something that hasn't happened.

One thing's tonight, there's a big reveal with a lot of these 65+ offerings and special fundraisers that the students have been doing. But we haven't had that big donor yet.

One year it was 50,000. Three years in a row, it was 20,000. So I don't know if that donor is sitting in this room today, Donna, or if they're online. But you know, I had a friend [who] once said, "Never resist a generous impulse. Satan doesn't put those in your heart."

And that's the piece we're waiting for: that God would put on someone's heart to do again: to add to what you students have done.

And I want to say thank you. You have inspired. We admire what you do as your fellow alumni. It is incredible walking around this campus and seeing your faces excited about first and foremost, doing something out of love for God. But to do something for Jonathan's House and one of our fellow alumni. So as we go to the Lord in prayer, I put one of the points up of our fundraising philosophy here at the University.

And I just wanted to remind as all that when Paul said, "Not that I desire a gift, but I desire fruit that may abound to your account."

Each of you who participated are going to share in the fruit of what Donna is doing there in central Africa. And that's for all eternity.

Join me! Let's pray that God would raise up, in addition to the incredible work you've done, one or two or three donors that will take us well beyond with God, all things are possible. And as we were instructed last night, let's ask that we may receive.

Let's join together.

Lord, we come before your throne, knowing that you are the provider of all. And we know that you work in hearts.

Lord, thank you for what you've done in the hearts of our students in the incredible way they have stepped up, out of love for you, out of love for a fellow alumnus, out of a love for your ministry to do what they can.

But Lord, we need some help and with you all things are possible. Put in the heart today of a man, a woman that you give a generous impulse and they know they can help take this over the top of our goal this year.

And Lord, to that end, collectively as men and women with hearts and thanksgiving to you, we ask that you would do this today in Jesus name. Amen.

The audience member is right: Matthews' ask is ... well, weird. It's typical for BJU though: "Yeah, God's good and all, but what are YOU gonna do today?"

Make sure you notice Matthew's slide about the "fundraising philosophy" at BJU:

Do fundraising as a ministry to the spiritual satisfaction of the donor (Acts 20:35b).

Acknowledge that God is our ultimate Provider (Deut. 8:18).

Recognize that our ministry partners share in the fruit of BJU's ministry (Phil. 4:17).

It's that first one that gets me: BJU actually thinks that their taking your money ministers to you?

That is some serious manipulation of Scripture right there.
