Breaking News: Nevermore Rips Off Ideas From More Popular Content Maker

Evidence has come to light that Nevermore creators Kate Flynn and Kit Trace have been taking ideas from a more popular content creator since the beginning of the comic.

Though it floated under the radar for quite some time, a sharp eyed fan recently caught the act, coming forward with incontestable evidence.

"The opening lines are taken- word for word- from the poem Annabel Lee, written by Edgar Allan Poe," says the whistleblower.

And that's not all, she revealed. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed that all character names and many parts of their backstories were taken from the works of Mr. Poe as well.

"It's blatant at this point," said the fan, shaking her head. "And the worst part is that most of the fandom doesn't even seem to care. Here I was, thinking we'd all watched that one Hbomberguy video and knew why plagiarism must be called out, and everyone just blows me off when I try to bring it up!"

"Well yeah, duh," said another fan when interviewed. "It's completely different."

But the whistleblower doesn't believe so. "Just think about how this Poe person must feel, knowing their work's been stolen and sold as a product!"

Nevermore News attempted, indeed, to reach Mr. Poe for comment, but were unsuccessful.

As far as I know, Eulalie was not confirmed to be autistic by the authors (however, there are posts of theirs I might have missed), but at least a significant part of the readers think she is because she shows some signs:

- She often doesen't get sarcasm and takes people's words literally

Example from ep. 47 :

Lenore: well. It appears that following this pathway is inadviseable. Berenice (sarcastic): really, you think so? It seems perfectly safe to me! Eulalie: oh, no! I have to agree with Lenore. Didn't you hear the screams, Berenice? Berenice: sure did, biscuit.

- She seems airheaded at first, but is actually quite smart and notices things others don't, and often isn't taken seriously (like when she tried to show her friends that they were talking to a shapeshifter disguised as their friend, not to the friend himself, but they didn't listen to her, in ep. 48)

- She can be quite blunt, even to her own detriment

Example from ep. 32:

Duke: how did you know that? Eulalie: we were eavesdropping Berenice: not on purpose! Eulalie: it was on puropse Berenice: gotta love that unique sense of humor. It- it really is swell Eulalie: but I wasn't making a joke

- She has a clear interest (creepy stuff, like she herself confirms in ep. 47, when she's asked if there's a reason she knows so much about drowsing rods: "No special reason, no, I just really like creepy stuff"), knows some very niche information about it, and often goes on rants about topics that interest her (like the history an function of drowsing rods and pendulums in ep. 47, or ancient funerary rituals in ep. 103)

Example from episode 88:

Duke: I don't know, Eulalie. Bones maybe. Bones are heavy? Eulalie: Not as heavy as you'd think! The human skull only weighs about eleven pounds Duke: sorry? Eulalie: oh! Five kilos. I forgot you were French. Pluto: how do you know that? Berenice: Eula knows all kinds of creepy junk, it's not that weird

- She's really spontaneous and sometimes has trouble understanding social norms (for example, in episode 32, she can be seen playing with the hair of another girl, who has to tell her to stop)

- She often does things that she only realizes might be weird afterwards

- As I said before, she tends to notice things other people don't, but also doesen't notice what other people find obvious

Example from episode 34:

[The group is exploring a creepy abandoned place and suddenly a doll with a cracked face appears]

Berenice: alright, that does it. I say we scram! Eulalie: but why? We just got here Berenice: Eulalie, honey, please. Didn't you see that creepy doll? Eulalie: oh, no! Her face is cracked. How sad. But even still. She's pretty in her own way. Don't you think? ... Eulalie: what's wrong? Did I do something strange, again? Lenore: not at all. I think everyone is just spooked Eulalie: I don't understand. What is there to be afraid of? We are the ghosts, now

So, I think there's a lot of evidence that points to the fact that Eulalie is autistic, even if it's not exactly canon.

If I was a bit smarter, I would have saved this for my 200th post, but now it's dedicated to finding Ada in Minnesota, so I guess I can't complain too much.

Anyway, here's this project I've been working on for *checks notes* over 2 months. There’s no way to justify the effort-to-quality ratio of this. I’ve already started planning my next one. (I have problems.)

Whatever, go read Nevermore.

I’m actually surprised no one else has put Nevermore to this song. King George III as a toxic ex was my favorite part of Hamilton, and what are Lenore and Annabel if not toxic? I really wanted to use two different covers because I imagined both of them singing this to each other. And there was so much material that fit! I’ve read this webcomic over three times now?

In that many months.

This story has a deathgrip on me.

That aside, I feel like I learned a lot from making this video. Well, I better have after spending a month+ on it. Even if it’s not exactly what I envisioned, I got to play with keyframes, masking, transitions, lyric timing (do not get me started. This was the worst part), audio balancing, and aspect ratios.

The end result is still pretty basic, but at least I know my way around my programs a little better.

ANYBODY READING NEVERMORE ON WEBTOON??? CAUSE,,, besides the PERFECT artwork and the Poe references and the historical setting intertwined with fantasy and the macabre, THE WAY THE CENTRAL RELATIONSHIP IS PORTRAYED?? ITS PERFECTION. [slight spoilers for 41-42 below the cut]

i've never found wlw relationships portrayed the way i want them to be and this. this takes the cake. this is it. give me that anger, that imperfection, that hand around the throat, that "To you alone, I have left myself completely defenseless," that, "Kill me if you choose, pet." It makes me weak. I need it. I need the love that you feel that makes you so, so wanting, to the point where you'd not only trust them to have their hands around your throat, but that you'd put their hands there yourself because "I don't want a new life if you're not in it." Nevermore is the best wlw comic i've read thus far because it makes you want it. because they're already in love but you don't know anything about their past life so you're unraveling the story backwards while their story in the afterlife progresses. because you can FEEL the tension, because the characters are multi-dimensional, because in the historical context they have their own struggles with femininity and identity and their roles in society but never with the fact that they want one another besides the need for trust being what keeps them apart. but they don't stay apart, they don't run away because it's scary to be queer, they don't stop chasing. Annabel Lee frustrates Lenore but she wants her, needs her, and we don't know more than the characters do. we feel that tension because we're experiencing their memories and trials as they experience them. we don't know what'll happen next. and god, Annabel Lee is beautiful, ethereal, but she's secretly so cunning and we want to know what's going on in her head. Lenore is honest and rugged but plays the game because Annabel Lee told her and she doesn't know why she wants to trust her, she just does. They want one another for so much more than physical intimacy and that sort of drive is so often omitted in lesbian stories on screen. i've been wanting THIS EXACT THING for so long. here it is. gorgeous work by Kate Flynn and Kit Trace. i can't wait to see how it continues
