Jade’s may not have needed it, but Kit’s cloak does need straightening, so Elora allows herself to reach out and do so. At first Kit makes a face and looks to pull away, but then apparently decides to be a champion about it and stoically holds herself still as if Elora is tying on her favor for a tournament. Kit’s cloak, like all her clothes, is velvety soft and rich, and Elora's fingers skim Kit’s throat, which is possibly even softer, and Kit flinches back so prettily from the faint touch.

Elora remembers, suddenly, the ice palace they made on the castle grounds one year. Elora must have been about nine; the winter was particularly biting and long, and the lakes froze hard and deep. Men carried great blocks of ice by sleigh up to the palace, stacked it high and filled it with candles. It was beautiful in its foreboding, in the way it echoed the crystal prison the kingdom had spent so long inside; the one Elora was too young to truly remember. She remembers the way that Prue teared up, at the sight. The way that she comforted herself by holding a candle as close to the ice as she could, and watching it begin to melt. The spring will always come again, Brunhilde, she’d said, as Elora held close to her skirts and watched the light of a thousand candles dance across and through the ice.
