One thing I’m appreciating a lot more on my Elementary rewatch is Kitty, and how the ensemble reacts to her.

Kitty could’ve just been a character created to create strife in the relationship between Joan and Sherlock, and she does, but it’s not for the usual reasons other shows would normally bring in a female character to do. Her initial antagonism towards Joan doesn’t come from just jealousy (and even that jealousy is valid, she’s worried about being sidetracked as Sherlock’s protege with Joan back) but also curiosity. Her antagonism melts once she and Joan connect beyond Sherlock. Sherlock and Joan clash over what they think she needs to develop as a detective but also heal as a person. Do they get certain things wrong? Of course they do, they’re also human.

Kitty is not a cliche. She’s a person. She’s a survivor who’s still in the midst of healing. She genuinely forms bonds with the ensemble outside Sherlock. She now has a network and well that network tries to help her, do good by her. She’s such a well written complex character.

I’m so glad we got Kitty Winters.

If You Would - Day 10

God I owe this entire chapter to Em. I was at an absolute loss of what to do for today's prompt but Em swooped in and saved me. Their idea was "Joan or Sherlock re-evaluating their time together and finding patterns that suggest that they’re In Love™" and it was too brilliant not to use

Day 10- Pattern

The first thing that comes to Sherlock's mind is he feels like he's sinking. The panic that grips someone when the ground beneath them is beginning to give, no pulling you beneath. Its truly the only thing that feels like an apt description in this moment.

He blames Kitty. He'd gotten a call from her expecting usual banter and a sarcastic remark or two. What he got was anything but. She'd confessed to him that she was worried that she might be in love with this girl she met from Archie's school. She'd given him a list of ways she knows and it has haunted him ever since.

Not because he's disapproving of her relationship. Rather, a lot of the reasons she shared were behaviors he's been noticing between Watson and himself.

Its what lead him here, standing in the doorway of the bathroom with his heart in his throat. Watson stands in front of the mirror twisting her dark locks into an updo when she spots him.

'I just can't take my eyes off her.' Kitty's words spring to his mind echoing and getting louder. He almost misses Watson's words.

"I'll be ready in ten minutes then we can leave."

'Even when she's doing absolutely nothing it feels like a punch to the chest.' He's not sure exactly why he's here. To test what she said? See if it rang true?

"Sherlock?"

'God I've gotten myself into one hell of a mess, haven't I?' Truly. He's about to do the same.

Watson turns towards him and he makes his move. One step and he's close enough that he can feel the heat radiate off of her. They stand in silence for a few seconds. He gives her plenty of time to push him away and yet, she doesn't.

"Sherlock?" His name spills from her lips again but none of the annoyance from the prior laces her tone. Confusion, anxiety, and dare he say hope take its place.

His hand comes to rest on her jaw pulling him to her. His lips connect with hers and the sinking feeling dissipates. Her own hands settle on his chest but they do not push away. He feels a rush down his spine as she grows bolder deepening the kiss. She tastes of the coffee and blueberries she'd had for breakfast. He can't help but gather as many details as possible.

She pulls away first, in need of air. He finds himself at a loss if she asks him to explain. Rather he swipes his thumb across her cheek taking in the details one last time before he releases her. "Ten minutes." He steps out of the bathroom and she doesn't follow.

He doesn't even explain himself the second time he kisses her, or the third, or any time after that. After all, this is all Kitty's fault.

TV Show Update:

Elementary season 3 episode 13: Kitty has finally left us. I really enjoyed her more the more time we got with her, but she did kind of go off track with kidnapping her rapist and dumping acid on him. Don’t say I blame her though.

Start of this episode has Sherlock trying to entertain himself without a protege and is post-sex with a couple of women who are taking no interest in his talk of cold murder cases. What kind of psychopaths are these women? I don’t know any women in my real life who aren’t entertained by true crime.

I don't understand why people don't like Kitty Winters. Like beyond she becomes Sherlock's daughter, basically, she is a strong character and I love her.

Non-Binary Kitty Headcanons.

So I’ve been thinking about Kitty being Non-Binary and have come up with these HC’s.

Kitty who came out in London, before they met Sherlock. Before their attack, even. Before their attack, they didn’t mind female pronouns. After that, they wanted to use they/them/their all the time.

The detective they worked with at Scotland Yard refused to acknowledge their pronouns, but Kitty soldiered on, knowing that they were unlikely to find anyone else willing to work with them.

They panic about telling Sherlock, but he’s not dumb and has it already figured out. He sits Kitty down one day and just states he’ll use whatever they want. Kitty lets out an audible sigh of relief.

Coming to New York made Kitty panic too. They knew they’d be meeting Joan Watson and even Sherlock hadn’t been able to convince them that Joan would happily use the correct pronouns.

Kitty has to try not to cry when Gregson promises that every officer they come into contact with will respect their pronouns or face sensitivity training. They hold it in until they’re alone. And then they cry.

Kitty and Miss Hudson get on well. They discuss coming out stories. Miss Hudson gives Kitty tips on dealing with people that don’t believe. Kitty gives Miss Hudson hope for the younger generation. They drink tea together a lot. Other than her meetings with Joan, these are Kitty’s favourite times.

Joan only misgendereds Kitty twice. Once when they first meet and a second time just before Sherlock corrects her. She apologises to Kitty and buys them Pronoun Stickers as a gift.

At their support group, Kitty lets themself be identified as a girl for the first few, before correcting everyone. The only complaint received is that they should have told them all straight away so that they didn’t misgender them. One of the women admits that they have a Non-binary child. Kitty feels infinitely more comfortable there after that.
