Storm Area SPCM - They Can’t Stop Us All!

Anyone remember a couple of months ago, when I made that announcement regarding Geddes Line?

Thought not, but I just thought I'd just remined everyone that the first episode, aptly titled The Story So Far, will be published a week from now, on both deviantART and FictionPress!

Fun fact: Normally when I publish each season of 'SPCM', I tend to have only five or six episodes actually in the can by the time the first one goes out. This time, however, having been writing 'GL' since the beginning of 2019, I'll have finished nineteen episodes by the 27th, with a twentieth halfway through production on that date.

Yarn by Kyoko Mori

From my TBR? No.

I knit so when I found out about this autobiography of someone's journey through knitting and other crafts, I pounced.

Unfortunately, I was deceived (my fault, I know). Knitting was not the main topic. It was more about the author's journey towards recovering from (or at least coming to peace with) her mother's suicide when she was a child. Not a light read, aye?

The author has lived (by her own account) extremely passively, allowing fate to bring her here and there, rarely taking the initiative.

One could argue that she perhaps had depression (who am I to diagnose someone after reading a book by them?) but there were some passages that truly made me want to get into the book and shake her out of her stupor.

It was an interesting read but I wouldn't particularly recommend it.

2019 reads: Shizuko’s Daughter

Shizuko's Daughter by Kyoko Mori.  Henry Holt and Co., 1993, 214 pages.

At once a family story and a coming-of-age, Shizuko's Daughter depicts teenage Yuki in the aftermath of her mother's suicide.  I was apprehensive at reading a book about suicide, which can be a difficult subject to read about, and to write about well. Shizuko's Daughter explores both Yuki's experiences and those of her other family members to create a picture of their lives that neither vilifies Shizuko nor shies away from the pain left behind by her actions.  Set in the 1970s in Kobe, book is also a fascinating glimpse into domestic life in 20th century Japan.

Mori Squadron

The full crew complement of the Stellar Typhoon is 75 people of various shapes, sizes, colours and denominations. Of that number, about 50 are officially trained as fighter pilots, on top of their normal positions. These 50 are divided up into five squadrons of ten pilots each, led by one of SPCM’s five main protagonists. Here we have the ten pilots making up Mori Squadron, with previously introduced members being included for clarity.
