WHAT DOES 액땜 MEAN?

So today someone from my company got fined on his way to work, and my boss was kind enough to console him that being fined was just 액땜, and thanks to that he won't have to go through hardships again next year.

According to the dictionary, 액땜 means "Being able to safely overcome the big difficulties that are coming up in the future by experiencing little ones in advance". I couldn't find the equivalant expression for this word in English, but if you do, please let me know!

And example: You can console someone who lost their wallet like this:

지갑 잃은 일을 액땜으로 쳐려~ 덕분에 나중에 힘든 일이 없을 거란 말이야~

"Just consider losing your wallet as the price you paid to avoid hardships later on."

✨ You can use this expression to tell people that you will be away, absent and unable to attend a certain event in the future. This can also be changed to use i the past.

A: 올라프, 이번 주말에 뭔가 같이 할래? B: 정말 그러고 싶지만, 난 다른 지역에 가 있을 거야. A: 아, 일 때문이야, 아니면 놀러 가는 거야? B: 로스앤젤레스에서 고객 한 분을 만나야 해. A: 아, 너무 아쉽다. B: 응, 하지만 아마 다음 주말에 만날 수 있을 거야. A: 그래, 나도 꼭 그러고 싶어. B: 좋아, 만나서 할 만한 재미있는 걸 생각해 볼게.

📀 Korean Grammar -(으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다/알았다 📀

💡 Example conversation (1): A: 민수 씨, 왜 숙제를 안 했어요? B: 숙제가 있었어요? 저는 숙제가 있는 줄 몰랐어요. 숙제가 없는 줄 알았어요.

A: Minsu, why didn't you do your homework? B: Did we have homework? I didn't know I had homework. I thought I didn't have any homework.

💡 Example conversation (2): A: 은혜 씨 남자친구 봤어요? 정말 멋있던데요. B: 은혜 씨 남자친구 있어요? 저는 은혜 씨 남자친구가 있는 줄 몰랐어요. 남자친구가 없는 줄 알았는데요.

A: Have you seen Eunhye's boyfriend? He's really cool. B: Eunhye has a boyfriend? I didn't know she had a boyfriend. I thought she didn't have a boyfriend.

💡 How to use this grammar: The grammar -(으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다 is used to end a clause stating something the speaker was not aware of or did not anticipate. (I did not know...)

The grammar -(으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ 줄 알았다 is used to end a clause stating that the speaker had assumed something to be the case, but the assumption turned out to be incorrect. (I thought...)

💡 How to conjugate adjectives, verbs and nouns: Adjectives: - Past (assumption): -(으)ㄴ 줄 몰랐다/알았다 - Future (prediction): -(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다/알았다 Verbs: - Past (assumption): -(으)ㄴ 줄 몰랐다/알았다 - Present (assumption): -는 줄 몰랐다/알았다 - Future (prediction): -(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다/알았다 Danh từ: - Past (assumption): -이었/였는 줄 몰랐다/알았다 - Present (assumption): -인 줄 몰랐다/알았다 - Future (prediction): -일 줄 몰랐다/알았다

💡 Additional examples: 앤디 씨가 오늘 학교에 온 줄 알았어요. 학교에 오지 않은 줄 몰랐어요. I thought Andy came to school today. I didn't know he didn't come to school.

바람이 많이 불어서 날씨가 추운 줄 알았어요. 그런데 밖에 나오니까 춥지 않아요. I thought the weather was cold because it was windy. But it's not cold outside.

저는 주영 씨가 중국 사람인 줄 몰랐어요. 한국 사람인 줄 알았어요. I didn't know JuYoung was Chinese. I thought she was Korean.
