The slender bean-like pods of Catalpa bignonioides (Indian bean tree, catawb, Indian cigar, smoking bean) have survived through the winter and still create a display. Soon the tree will be covered with large leaves, produce white flowers with orange and purple markings and more pods.

Relics of the Past, Laguna's First House

Description

"Relics of the Past / Laguna’s First House" supposedly depicts the first house in Laguna Beach. But this scene was revisited by Coburn again and again, and the title of another iteration scrawled in pencil on its reverse by Coburn himself betrays slightly more about the subject matter, "The House I Lived In." This work was donated to the museum by the artist's sister, Georgia DeLong.

Description

This painting illustrates the prophecy of Isaac's birth to Abraham near the oak of Mamre, in the eighteenth chapter of Genesis. Sarah being too old to bear children, Abraham had resigned himself to having no offspring. One day, he received a visit in his tent from three angels dressed as ordinary visitors, to whom he offered food and shelter. After the meal, the angels announced to Abraham the coming of a son.
