No Yeast Required, Just Add Christ
Last night while reading my Bible, I happened upon a short passage that I never really noticed before. It read:
“Your boasting is not a good thing. Do you not know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch, as you really are unleavened. For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. Therefore, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” ~1 Corinthians 5:6-8 (NRSV).
For some reason, the analogy of yeast really grabbed my attention. Why yeast? Why not symbolize with something else? I decided to do a little side research on the properties of yeast and the difference between leavened and unleavened bread, and that’s when it hit me: yeast is alive.
For those that may not know, yeast is a type of single-celled fungi. And if you paid attention in high school biology, you would know that the cell is the smallest living organism that contains all features of life. Furthermore, most living things on this planet begin as single-celled organisms. Going along with this understanding, in this analogy of the leavened/unleavened bread, yeast is essentially a source of life, fostering transformation in the dough that it’s added to.
Now normally, we consider life a good thing. But in this passage, the yeast is not so good. It represents evil and malice. As I was reading this and trying to make the connection between the symbol of yeast with evil and malice, it struck me: evil is not something stagnant and dead. Rather, just like yeast, it’s something that can take control and transform. It is alive. If it weren’t, it wouldn’t be something to be warned against and we wouldn’t have to be told that just a little yeast (or a little evil) can leaven a whole batch of dough (can take hold and transform a person). I don’t know about you, but when I think of evil as something living, it sends shivers down my spine. Likening evil to yeast helps me see that there is a living power to it that I never really attributed to it before.
Going back to the passage, the Bible says for us to clean out the old yeast so we can be a new batch because we really are meant to be unleavened. In essence, we are God’s children and, because of that, we are meant to be pure and untouched by evil. With Christ’s sacrifice, we can be seen as so. Through His sacrifice, we actually can be made pure, unleavened, uninfluenced by the living evil that abounds within this world.
Essentially, we don’t need evil to give us life and transform us. Rather, it is Christ that we can receive life and transformation from. Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” We don’t need the yeast – the life – of evil. We have Christ, the Living Bread, who provides all the life we need for us.
How beautiful is that? <3
