More LU Headcanons - Warriors Language edition
It was pointed out in the comments of my last post (here) that Jojo says that Warriors is "slightly multilingual" due to the War of Eras (thank you @alienchickensandcows for finding that for me :D).
Thinking on what that means, here's what I think happened:
It's likely that a pidgin language would have developed during the war, combining the various languages of the visitors, standard spoken Hylian, and the common soldiers slang in Warriors' era (a pidgin language is a "contact language that develops between two or more groups of people that do not have a language in common").
Consequently, Warriors will know a little bit of a lot of languages. If he has a mind for languages, he may be able to understand a simple conversation in one of the influencing languages, though he'd likely have more trouble communicating back.
I still maintain that Warriors wouldn't have had much time during the war to sit down and learn a language, nor do I think he'd have much opportunity after it's over. There's also the additional complication that, depending on how long it's been since the war ended, that he won't be using the pidgin as much and so is likely to forget a lot of it. I usually say it's been 2-5 years between the war and LU for him (17-19 during the war and 21-22 during LU - I'll make a post on ages at some point probably). If you took a language class in school, consider how much you remembered a few years later.
That said, there are definitely words from the pidgin that stuck in his head, that he uses amongst the chain, which completely confuses the other knights who don't know the pidgin. Time almost definitely remembers some of the words, but not all of them. Legend, Wild, Four, and occasionally Twilight will recognise some of the words, which is almost more confusing to them.
I'm a 'Wind went to HW before LU' fan, so he's definitely still fluent in the pidgin. It's only been like 6 months for him. He tends to translate for Warriors when the captain slips into the pidgin when directing attacks against monsters.
(If Wind hadn't gone to HW first, he'd likely be on par with Legend and Wild in understanding it)
