There was a point in time during which I couldn’t tell my parents I loved them, years ago (I’ve been told it was because I was much more depressed at the time). I did end up “growing out of it”, and I was able to tell them I love them without so much as a second thought, but now… recently, I’ve been questioning: Do I really love my parents? I care about them a lot, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I love them. A part of me even wonders if I don’t want to love (irl beings) in the first place? I thought I was love-ambivalent, but maybe I’m kind of averse? But I also don’t want to hurt my parents, and saying I don’t love them feels wrong, but saying I do love them doesn’t really feel right? Those words—“I love you”—feel almost kinda empty. Probably. Maybe. Ugh. I mean, hell; even telling Luna—the family cat—that I love her feels weird and not right to me, even though I thought I loved cats. Maybe it feels different to say I love some being in particular rather than just saying I love a thing in general?

Idk; maybe I should attempt to replace the word “love” in my vocabulary with other terms & phrases, like “adore” (though I feel like that term in particular comes too close to “love”—specifically in a romantic context—for my liking sometimes), “care deeply about”, “admire”, etc. It’s just that the word “love” is so deeply ingrained into our everyday lexicon that it’s difficult to think of other ways to describe how you feel about something unless you actually stop to think about it.
