I have been considering this all day and drawing a blank because this is such an open-ended question it makes me existential! I will say, I wish more people would indulge in the iddish pleasures of class traitorism and betrayal as much as they do in the more classic romance fantasies of assimilating into a better and more secure class lifestyle. Whither the romantic running away from society's terrible ways of yore! WHITHER!!!!!!

25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing

honestly every single complaint that comes down on xyz AUs as a sign that fandom is Not Engaging With The Material. i feel like attacking the form of the au itself is just a misdiagnosis of what people dislike, which is that the tropey nature is used as a structure on which to hang the writing - thus disguising the author's own weak grasp of the characters and the canon's themes / structures. the problem as always is weak writing and i wish more of the conversation was oriented towards how AUs could be made interesting and put in conversation thematically with a canon. some of my fave fics have been the Dreaded Modern AU that engaged very deeply or thoughtfully with the canon, albeit at a slight remove. in doing so, i felt like i gained more and unexpected ways of thinking abt the canon in itself! it can be very rewarding as a reading of the canonical text when in good hands! i would like more hands to be strengthened and given the tools to articulate deeper and more complex AU visions, because, well, there are only so many times i can read the same version of the same character sketches and canon missing scenes :P

​oh that's awesome!! i used to have a few houseplants in my last two years of uni (had a beautiful monstera and a bird of paradise that grew taller than me, a fiddle leaf fig etc) but i had to give away all my houseplants when i moved back to hk for a summer…plans were up in the air and i ended up asking neighbours to foster them for a while and..never asked for them back lol bc it had been too long since i reached out to them. hope they're thriving...

mike, i, for one, am shocked you do not have your own fanlore page. i think we should make you one. feels like a key resource for the future tobermoriansass studies field.

ah but i have already achieved enough notoriety from appearing on both the zacharias smith page and obscuro! exchange page, both of which i suspect are pages made by old old friends of mine. form must follow the subject, i fear, and there can be no better means of pursuing the field of tobermoriansass studies than having to sift through the vast detritus of the internet in search for crumbs of meaning - often futilely. it is, as they say, the tumblr experience, and essential to facilitating an accurate understanding of the subject, as it were.

that's what I'm saying!! like objectively I should be onboard with the symbolism of him losing this representation of himself and his soft preservation tendencies literally into the body of a dead corporate in a visceral bloody act followed by [extremely long censored buzzer]ing gurathin for ten straight minutes, it was just a little too, how should I say, wet for my tastes

20. What’s the story behind your pen name?

TobermorianSass and clovis_unleashed are both very boringly taken from various Saki stories: Tobermory about the eponymous cat who reveals various gossip when taught to talk & The Unrest Cure which is Clovis at his most enfant terrible. TobermorianSass = Tobermory + adjectival ending + sass. clovis_unleashed is really the only way you can describe what Clovis is doing in that particular story.

22. Do you have a fixed writing routine, or do you write when you have time? Is there a time of day when you prefer to write?

I write exclusively when I have time. Most of the writing gets done in the evening or at night. If I think about writing in the morning, it means I go into work thinking about writing & I'm only half committed to the tasks at hand.

Also I set very gentle goals for myself i.e. 500 words a day max.

I think you are very right about the dark and twisted TV! Sanctuary Moon because personally I've been chewing for a month on "When you inducted me into this hideous religion called love, you took away the only human who has ever shown me kindness" and why it is addressed to Kullervv and how NawBot chooses to never follow his order to decapitate him and instead squeezes his eyes out and the poetics of being blinded by a navigation unit and --

I KNOW. and the fuckinnnng. holes cut out all over its uniform. and the obvious undertones to telling a feminized serving bot to smile. and reversing that order on kullervv while shoving him to his knees. man.
