Summary:

Sansa placed her hands on her swollen belly, feeling the quickening within. Closing her eyes, she considered how they reached that point.

A point of no return.

Years ago, the Mad Queen had rained fire upon the people of King's Landing. Jon Snow had attempted to kill her. She survived the attack and kept her promise.

She freed the World, from Winterfell to Dorne, from Lannisport to Qarth, from the Summer Isles tot he Jade Sea, by burning it.

She kept Jon Snow alive, so he would watch the new World, so he would beg her to spare the North and Sansa Stark.

"Let it be Fear." She had kept that promise too.

Then, there was the dragonpox outbreak, along the famine.

The Dragonbane, the people whispered of the era, from the decease, mostly the children suffered, death reached in their cribs. Then the women, years passed and less and less were blessed with the fruit of the womb.

So the people prayed... and the Lord of Light listened.

Years later, Sansa Stark is summoned to King's Landing, as Nurturer, blessed by the Lord to carry the children of Daenerys and Aegon Targaryen.

Dragon and wolfs blood to keep the Kingdoms from falling apart.

Blessed Be the Fruit.

mad Jon would have made more sense than mad Dany

start it with coming back from the dead, plenty of angst potential they just forgot about

seeing Rickon killed in front of him

hell, the guy almost beat Ramsay to death with his hands 

learning his Targaryean heritage and that his whole life and identity has been a lie

battle with the white walkers (could be better if the battle was ... y’know, better)

Sansa’s betrayal of his trust

Rhaegal’s death (dragons and their riders are supposed to have a deep and significant bond, but D&D just kind of forgot that)

the whole R+L thing wouldn’t have been completely pointless

if Dany’s Targaryean heritage made it inevitable she would go insane, then why not Jon’s?

and you know what else

mad Jon AND mad Dany combined would have been hot as hell

Mad Dany Could Have Been Great

Listen. GRRM is a hippie. His whole point with the war of the five kings is that war and vying for the throne will NEVER make the players happy, and it will destroy the realm and cause lots of pain and trauma. Reading Fire and Blood it's even more clear to me he's. Never once had the Iron Throne make anyone happy. Even Jahaerys the Wise with his long reign, earnest desire for reform, and happy marriage still got a lot of pain just from sitting on that chair. He's also not about the whole divine right of kings shit. If we thought he was gonna give us some, "Aragorn is the True and Right King of Gondor" ending with Danaerys, I don't think we were paying attention.

To me it feels Very GRRM to have Dany be so completely ruined by the quest for the throne that she is transformed from an earnest and powerful young girl determined to be a breaker of chains to a woman who has lost so much she is embittered, sees enemies wherever she looks, and has become too jaded to care about the innocent lives she once had empathy for. It actually also feels... smart. I like that ending. It's tragic, but well done. GRRM doesn't let conqueror's tales end in contentment. He never has.

And to the show's credit, I think the plot has put Dany through a whole fucking lot. I found her plea to Jon Snow rather moving. You can just feel how hard she's worked for everything in her life up to his point, and how terrified she is of having it taken away from her at the 11th hour. It would make me paranoid and distrustful of those closest to me as well. Add in the murder of two of her dragons and the death of her friends, the sheer cruelty of Cersei, and I mean of course she decides to burn Kings Landing to the ground. You can feel how it's all slipping away from her hands she's Danaerys fucking Targaryen, does Cersei THINK she's gonna lay down like a dog! She's a conqueror she WILL burn them all.

I find that transformation believable. And also. Kinda inevitable, for anyone. You cannot win a game of chess without sacrificing some pawns. Now me personally, I would never start the game to begin with. But if you're going to play. You are going to be directly responsible for the deaths of millions of innocents. If you're scared of that and your enemies aren't you will lose.

So the more I think about it, Dany becoming bloody and jaded and bitter is extremely fitting. My problem is the show. Did. Not. Execute this even REMOTELY well.

First of the pacing of last episode felt like I ingested speed before viewing I mean holy crap, slow down Boys. All of these things that should have been shown to gradually push her over the edge with a grand culmination were kinda just. thrown at us in 10 minutes of concentrated screen time and it's like "woaahhhkay I guess this is how they're framing Dany now? Maybe?"

Again to their credit Dany has always been portrayed as compassionate with a hard edge. If you cross her. She will destroy you. Mercilessly. However I think they've spent most of the show having her destroy people who are fundamentally unsympathetic. We're meant to cheer when she burns people. They needed to spend more time showing how her actions have become increasingly more chaotic, show the process more. I suspect this may be one of the secret plot points GRRM told D&D about that they're hitting, just with terrible writing, direction, timing, and overall execution.

Saying that Dany is like a school shooter is like saying a brick is like a pug. It doesnt work. School shooters fantasize, plan and dream about their attacks. Dany has NEVER killed an innocent before, even given plenty of chances. She has mercy. School shooters dont. Maybe next time stay in your lane and don’t try to talk about things you clearly don’t understand

Rampage shooters usually haven’t killed ANYONE before the shooting.

Dany has repeatedly killed defenceless people in cruel and unusual ways.

Dany already has brutality and cruelty as her established characteristic.

Dany did fantasise about about burning cities and did issue threats about doing so.

Belief in killing of defenceless people as a problem solving method is already a huge warning sign, let alone actually doing it.

Other warning signs are for example aggrieved entitlement. Dany has irrational entitlement to ruling Westeros which for some reason was opposed by many people.

She was showing red flags for a very long time. It’s just that many her fans ignored them because of expectations from fantasy tropes and because how G.R.R. Martin has set up Ned as an example for what happens if you aren’t totally ruthless in this game.

Also she didn’t need any period of mental preparation that shooters have because she already repeatedly killed defenceless people. It was just finding another group of people to kill.

The moment she decided “fuck these people, I’ll make an example of this place”, was the moment she was ready to kill them all.

Mercy doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a temporary sentiment. There was already established pattern of using extreme violence against defenceless people.

Yeah, she had mercy for the “innocent”, but after the world has been pouring unending torrent of shit on her for her entire life and she lost her social support network, she finally lost it.

Except that she wasn’t a teen that progresses from wanting to defeat bullies to just killing everyone over months. She was already a brutal warlord with a weapon of mass destruction and to her shifting to killing "innocents” was just a matter of days or even hours after changing her mind about mercy.

Also, even someone like Anders Breivik was capable of mercy, he spared some of his targets. Columbine shooters have spared multiple people, including one of their bullies because they had a conversation with them.

Burning a mob from a dragon is probably much easier than shooting classmates because distance and lack of personal interaction makes killing much easier.
