Here’s the final cake knife of last week with bonus coordinating cutting board. The cake knife is a santoku style blade in figured black walnut and the grip is curly birch. The cutting board is maple, jatoba and more of the curly birch. Swipe to see a video of the chatoyance in the shop lights. If you’ve never worked with birch, I’d suggest you get some to try out. I find it’s workable like walnut but holds up more like maple. Nice stuff. Not really meant to be a #tbt but anyone remember this guy? This is the last of 4 Charcuterie boards from the first batch of spalted silver maple that I had milled. This one had some splits, so I added some butterfly keys in cherry for some stability and contrast. It’ll be on its way to its new home, which coincidentally, was its old home. Someone new moved in to the neighbors house and my parents wanted a unique gift. I’d say this counts. Here’s the latest cake knife. First ballet got to oil this one and take some glamour shots. Figured maple chef’s blade with a zebra wood handle and black walnut bolster. I really like this combo. The walnut and zebra wood are so different by themselves, but they blend into one another so well in this piece. Here are the latest two cake knives in progress. The one in back has been final sanded and is ready for pyrography, but will wait a day or 2 for his buddy to catch up. The one in front was freshly shaped and sanded but still needs a water coat and a breather to raise the grain. I’ll sand it again then bring everything up somewhere around 320 before the pyrography and oil. Here’s a fun #tbt to about a year ago when I was working on a huge gear reduction to crank over the planer on my flip top cart. This project never panned out, but it sure was fun to build. Originally, I had speculated that it was a weight issue, but @kraftedbyengineer Clarified that it’s more of a rotational force thing. I.e. the planer’s weight distribution is not at the axle, but more like 12” from it, so that multiplies the force required to move it, or requires a counterbalancing weight, which I don’t have. I still have all these gears and I hope to put them to use on something one day. While I’m wrapping up a few projects, this batch of spalted maple that I cut last fall on the bandsaw is ready for the planer. I let the logs dry a bit without sealing the ends, so they split. I’ll need to do some epoxy work, but I’ve got the right stuff to make that look good now. Moisture content is right at 8% and since it’s like 98% humidity these days, I think that’s pretty good.
