The Magnus Archives: Season 1 Finale

Okay, ended up combining MAG039 and MAG040 into their own post because they’re both connected and. Whoo. I had a lot of thoughts about these.

Infestation

- gee I wonder what the title could be referring to.

- Penultimate episode of season 1 lets gooooo!!!!

- OHHH STARTING OFF STRONG also gives us an immediate look at how the three of them (Jonathan/Sasha/Martin) handle fear:

Jonathan gets loud and practical to try and deal with it (checks out with his usual sceptic approach to the statements)

Sasha goes from wanting to run to trying to ask questions/get information (to make as clean an exit as possible i think). She’s focused more on getting through the encounter full stop, presumably so she can brainstorm afterwards. Reminiscent of her statement/episode where she was investigating the issue but also impulsively sprayed the extinguishers- she’s curious and she investigates but when scared enough she prioritises just getting out alive (wise)- like she sort of tunnel visions on something that she thinks will save her and then commits to it.

Martin freezes and spirals, but seems to follow instructions pretty well if people are firm enough (so can be snapped out of his spiralling). That *doesn’t* really line up with the start of his statement/episode and honestly that to me highlights that he was going out of his way to push forward with the investigation despite his fears (which tbf was also obvious from the way he and the others talked about his normal behaviour). It *is* in line with him ending up hidden in his own flat for ages without attempting to escape, just staying in the one place he knew was safe.

- They’re pulling the worms out with a CORKSCREW?????

- Ohhh, Jonathan doesn’t want to ‘become a mystery’. Because he reads the statements and doesn’t always believe them and he knows that often they can’t and didn’t do anything for the statement givers and they don’t even know how they died and they can’t even deal with whatever caused it. He wants his death to be believed and to mean something and to help someone else actually do something about it :((

- Gertrude is legally missing??? Didnt Jonathan say Elias told him she ‘died in the line of duty’??? I mean okay either way she’s dead but. Are we not going to question why Elias said dead rather than MIA/missing/*likely* dead???

- Ohhh Jonathan resents taking this role without the full context of how dangerous it was. I mean clearly he would’ve taken it anyway but I’m guessing his lack of information of Gertrude combined with the disorganisation of the files making it hard to know what pieces are missing all adds together to be pretty frustrating :(

- Also this is maybe not a great episode to crochet to lol i keep having to put my work down to type

- Oh, interesting about the laptop! I figured that a lot of them didn’t record to that but the fact it’s a pretty much even split between ones that seem real and don’t *and* Jonathan has also clocked that makes it all the more interesting. Also that we only seem to be listening to the tape ones and not the (fake?) laptop ones

- Oh god shout out to Sasha for trying to save Tim but that’s very much doubling down on my ‘she gets tunnel vision and commits’ idea. Fully flinging herself into the line of fire for Tim and then just sprinting out of the building for help. I love her but hhh the stress lol

- Tim playing with the tape was fun though and Prentiss was delightfully creepy.

- Martin spiralling again he’s so #me before I started my meds. I’d say ‘worm’ but that might be a bit disrespectful given the context.

- Ohhh pop off Martin!!! You’re SO right Jonathan DOES need to chill on the scepticism

- Aww poor Jonathan

- “We’re clearly doing a whole heart-to-heart thing” yes you are <3

- Having said that I dont think Martin quitting would actually do much to protect him from Jane at this point. I think he’s sort of stuck with her.

- I feel bad for Martin saying he feels stuck here but i wonder if theres another layer to that… like Something in the archive is keeping him stuck there.

- Jonathan thinking he’s a ghost shshgsgsgs Martin’s reaction was EXACTLY mine lmaooooo.

- Oho Sasha pulled the fire alarm i think? Smaaaaart. And Elias getting extra recordings for Jonathan is soooooo. Idk what to think about him I feel like he’s linked to uhhhh original guy who’s lastname is Magnus and who set up the archive, and by linked I mean in a bad/supernatural way. And this could be simply a plot device but also him making sure Jonathan has recordings of whats happening is actually pretty thoughtful of him. Especially since if it was a plot device they could just have Sasha do it on the basis that she JUST heard Jonathan talking about how he wants this to all be on record incase he dies.

- TIM WITH THE STEEL CHAIR GAS CANNISTER??? Martin’s extra CO2 cans came through!!! Also him taking his clothes off dhshgaga

- Also Martin recording his poetry on the archive recorders made me giggle poor guy has been in here for faaaaar too long

- Oh god no Sasha found Graham’s table.

- Sasha talking to the tape recorder like it’s actually John on the phone :((

- If any of these characters die I’m breaking into the Rusty Quill HQ and killing Jonathan Sims (writer and VA) myself.

- WHAT DO YOU MEAN MARTIN’S DISAPPEARED????????? Okay my assumption he would freeze under panic was incorrect djdhsh

- Oho. Tim nailed it lmao.

- LOVED this episode. I was going to go to bed after ‘one more episode’ but I suppose now I have to stay awake for the last one. C’est la vie.

Human Remains

- okay it’s 2am so i did have to put my dog to bed (it’s like 3 hours past her bed time) and go upstairs myself. Pros: i’m tucked into my own bed with my blinds closed instead of sat on the couch staring at a wide open dark window. Cons: no more dog curled up next to me to keep me calm and happy, also i went to the bathroom while up here and discovered a spider in there which is not great :(

- Also. Hm. Not sure about that title! Maybe they mean it in a subverted way and they’re saying that only what is human will remain at the end and all the bad things will be gone :) (<- voice of girl who’s definitely not panicking)

- Oh god we’re doing a post-event statement again. I already miss the live stuff.

- Jonathan and Tim need fresh air?? Not Martin???? Please tell me they found Martin???????

- “When Martin found…” okay so they did meet back up with Martin? He found something? WHERE IS HE THEN?

- Jane Prentiss is dead. I feel kind of bad for her actually. But maybe I’m misplacing my stress over Martin (and Sasha!!! Where is she?!!!)

- SASHA MENTION thank goddd

- “Tens of thousands of… things without mouths screaming as one” oh, great, lovely.

- Elias comparing them to swiss cheese 😭

- Martin mention!!!! Poor guy finding a dead body but at least it wasn’t him. Odds on it being Gertrude?

- Oop there it is

- Tim making jokes and trying to be upbeat when he just wants to go home :( poor guy :(

- Trying to make a doorway???? What???

- Wait. Unrelated to Sasha’s statement. I wonder if the tapes going missing/not working/whatever had anything to do with a) the table, b) the associated vase, or c) whatever made her scream at the end? Like maybe whatever was crawling out of the vase at the end of lost and found was involved in nuking the tapes or something??

- Oho her voice went weird? Was it Micheal in the artifact room???

- Why is Sasha being so… flat? Weird?

- Elias looking at her strangely… ohh i bet he felt guilty about running away from her when they ran into the worms.

- Sasha is definitely being weird about the tape. Even Jonathan picked up on it.

- Martin checking in on Jonathan :(

- Martin being the most forthcoming with his statements and still getting yelled at 😭 leave my guy aloooone

- OUGH HIM APOLOGISING FOR LEAVING JON…. Hhhhhh

- Boxes full of cassette tapes? Was Gertrude recording stuff (potentially statements, potentially her own demise) when she died??

- Shot??? Thats so human???

- Missing tapes… i think whatever’s going on with Sasha is related to this. I assume she has to be possessed or being threatened or something and it isnt just her of her own accord but I suspect she’s part of this and at least part of the reason why the tapes are missing.

- Had to skim back through but 0160204 is Sasha’s statement about Micheal and 0051701 is the one about the Calliope organ/clown dolls. The one about Micheal makes sense because he’s an unknown entity related to Prentiss (and Sasha- and potentially linked in to whatever Sasha saw last episode and whatever is going on with her). The Calliope one is weirder because i don’t remember it having any major plot relevations. Per my quick notes from that episode though it WAS the first time we saw Sasha. Are those two the only times (except in this and the last episode) that Sasha’s been on tape? Did someone (something) steal them to better… mimic her, maybe? Play her? I WISH i could double check that with a cast list but alas i cannot be bothered going back through the episodes

- Actually wait. Graham’s table. He was taken by the weird long shadown thing and replaced by a barely the same copy. Michael looks like a person but distorts into some enlongated thing. Are they the same, like, species? Has Sasha been replaced or possessed by one of those?? Is that maybe related to the uhhhh anatomy class things????

Overall i have maybe more questions than answers from this finale but it was GREAT and I wanna watch the next episode already. I wont though, i need to sleep. But I want to.
