Potentially controversial opinion but I personally never jived with the term 'Maharashtrian' as a synonym for 'Marathi'.

First of all, I would think anyone who lives in Maharashtra is Maharashtrian regardless of the language they natively speak.

Second of all, the word Marathi already exists??? Use that???
