Maiden Grass or Chinese Silvergrass (Miscanthus sinensis) waving in the wind in Coal Drops Yard.

Facing a bright backdrop, the exposure was biased a conservative 2/3-stop darker. Shutter speed was fast enough at 1/400 second even for moving grass.

The distinctive variegated arching leaves of Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegatus' (maiden grass, Japanese silver grass) help form a central feature to this border. It looks great with a range of other herbaceous perennials.

Ornamental grasses look great in the autumn in both their habit and the late season colours. Miscanthus sinensis 'Malepartus' (eulalia, maiden grass) is an old cultivar which forms large columns up to 2m, with silver veined foliage and flowerheads which are a dark purple-red and fade to silver. This grass needs a sunny open position.

Genus name comes from the Greek words miskos meaning a stem and anthos meaning flower in reference to the stalked spikelets. Specific epithet means Chinese.
