many of the guys that mary dated got mad at her because she was always blowing them off to go see marlene. she’d run out of dates early with her coat half-on because she’d just die if she couldn’t tell her best friend something right at that moment. whenever she dated a quidditch player she’d never run to him first after the game, she’d always find marlene immediately. they’d hug and marlene would always debrief her breathlessly on everything the commentator forgot to mention. after all the games she’d gone to, mary had picked up the rules of quidditch, but she never let marlene know that because she liked hearing her explain. mary sometimes wore marlene’s quidditch sweaters. marlene helped mary do her hair for parties. they’d always get ready together listening to their favorite records. they’d tell each other everything, always had. when mary heard that her best friend was killed, she thought numbly, i have to tell marlene.
