a trucker au for lyle and rozalyn wainfleet from the symbiosis universe
"I don't wanna leave her. She's far enough along, I could miss..."
"I'm just asking for two weeks, Wainfleet. Two weeks and I'll give you an extended paternity leave." Miles ran his hand over his face, gaze meeting Lyle's across the desk. "Two weeks."
Lyle sighed, leaning back in the chair. he should have known, with the recent relocation of the company, that there would be a ramp. Miles had been as accommodating as he could be, and so far, Lyle had been able to keep his job in management. but with ramps, comes change. they had received many applications, and there were enough drivers in the training process that this would only be temporary, but leaving Rosie as pregnant as she was and having to leave the girls, Lyle wished Miles would have chosen someone else.
but, with their friendship, and having been able to rely on each other from their time in the military, through their honorable discharges, to tighter seasons with the trucking company, Lyle knew there was no other way - and that Miles would have avoided asking if he could have.
"Is it just the cross country drop off and the pick up on the other end?"
Miles looked over the clipboard again and nodded. "Yeah. Three trailer changes on the way to, two on the way back." He looked over his glasses. "Then, you're home. The rest of the drivers will be through training and you won't have to leave your desk job again."
"Extended paternity leave?" Lyle sat up a little straighter as his friend confirmed this once more.
Roz hadn't been particularly excited when Lyle had come home with the news, her pregnancy hormones increasing her anger at the situation more than usual. she waddled back and forth across the kitchen floor, her whisper laced with white hot frustration after they had put the two girls to bed.
"Are you freaking kidding me? Doesn't he know how much I need you home, to help with the girls? Does he know that the baby could come any time within the next month? Doesn't he understan... that's it. I'm going to drive to the office in the morning and bust down his door and..."
she turned on her heel, and upon seeing her husband's distress, she held him as he buried his face in her neck and hugged her tight, upset at having to leave her.
"We'll get through this, soldier. It's gonna be okay." her featherlight fingers rubbed his back, the baby kicking his torso, both soothing the anxious thrumming of his heart. they would be alright.
"Promise you won't break down his door?"
after several moments of silence, Lyle gently poked her side, making her laugh.
