I forgot to comment on how fucking brilliant the fight scene between Matthew and Carl was like FUCK the choreography, the camerawork, the dialogue, the girls screams. It HURT.

I find it interesting that you've included Max King in your list of favourite characters in Emmerdale. The Kings have been my favourite Emmerdale family since I first started watching the show back in 2006. I think that Matthew King (his rivalry with Grayson Sinclair was hilarious!) was my favourite out of the four brothers, although I loved Carl as well. It makes me sad that the original King family members e.g. Tom Sr, Rosemary (oh how Matthew despised that woman!), Sadie, and all of the brothers apart from Jimmy were killed off or left in about 8 years after they'd been introduced. They were such an interesting power family in the village with varying different personalities which made them so much fun to watch. I love that the King brothers could be these ruthless and professional businessmen one moment and then fight or taunt each other like mischievous little boys the next. The brothers' obsession with being number one in their dad's eyes was intriguing to me. The father and brothers had their touching moments as a family too, such as their reactions to Max's death (e.g. Matthew catching and holding up a devastated Carl when he nearly collapses in tears is a rare sweet and caring brotherly moment from him). I sort of wish that modern fandom could be more interested in creating a richer backstory for the family history of the Kings since they were only introduced in 2004. That's 30 or more years to build up some lore. But then again, most of the family have been gone for so long that I think it makes sense not to see many fanworks about them. I think it's cute that Jimmy and Carl sort of paid tribute to their Scottish mum by wearing kilts at Jimmy's wedding. Matt Healy who played Matthew actually improvised their mum being Scottish when he did an impression of her in the show. The Kings also witnessed Jack Sugden disowning Robert publicly after Jack furiously told Robert that he belonged with them rather than the Sugdens. It would be interesting to compare Jack and Tom Sr as fathers since they both had difficult and complex relationships with their sons. Sorry for how long this was, I just love this family so much and it is so nice to see a modern Emmerdale fan speak so highly of Max considering he was only in the show for a few months. firstly, never apologise for a long ask like this! i should be thanking you because i totally agree with what you're saying!!

i'd love to see more emmerdale fics revolving around non-robron related stuff (even though i obviously love our boys) and the kings would be brilliant for sure. i loved all four of the brothers for different reasons but i thought max was just so lovely and deserved much better. i would've loved to have seen him have a few more storylines with him at the centre, and while his death scenes were obviously impactful and served the purpose of saying goodbye to robert's character, i wish they'd just had him leave rather than killed him off. same with the rest of them, like the whole family was basically wiped out except jimmy and he's mostly been reduced to comic relief / a supporting character these days which sucks. i know jimmy and nicola have kids but it's not the same. give me carl king any day, my favourite 'love to hate' man! and i loved sadie king so much!! what a bitch, but an iconic bitch, they really should bring her back

my family / siblings have the same sort of rivalry and need to prove ourselves as the favourite, so i connected with them on a spiritual level. but i like that they came together sometimes too, when they weren't stabbing each other in the back or literally killing each other lol

i wish we could've explored more of robert's relationship with them as well considering, as you said, they were there when jack disowned him, and then he was obviously partially responsible for max's death, so i would've liked to have seen the aftermath of that. i think they should round up all the stray kings and bring them back like sadie, anya, scarlett, lexi, etc. either that or they need to introduce a new family with the same sort of vibe that they can build on over the next few years

the village is overrun with dingles, give us a new family! or, better still, bring in the merricks so robert has family when victoria leaves, but that's a whole other post lmao

The closer it got to the end of the date, the more nervous Matt got. He had a big plan in mind and he wanted it to go perfectly.

Little did he know, Scarlett's mind was on the same wavelength.

"It's about hecking time," she said with a big smile as he got down on one knee to propose. "I was beginning to think you'd wait 'til the twins were moved out of the house."

Matt laughed awkwardly. "I was waiting for the perfect time... all last spring I wanted to ask you... but we had the twins and couldn't really go out... and now... I don't know, I guess I realized the perfect moment wasn't going to happen."

"Well, it's perfect to me..." Scarlett smiled warmly down at him. "You're perfect... So yes! Yes, of course I'll marry you."
