William: Dad, I'm gay.
Oliver: That's alright, son. I love you regardless.
Tommy: Dad, so am I.
Oliver, exasperated: Is there anyone in this family who likes girls?
Maya: I do.

Post 7x08 flash-forwards: After receiving a visit from William, Dinah and Zoe, Blackstar makes a call to her mother.
I keep going back & forth over Mia’s parentage. My logical self thinks she’s olicitys. It’s what makes sense. It’s the best pay off for the main characters. But there’s another part of me that thinks arrow prioritizes the GOTCHA! over what makes sense & what would be most pleasing to viewers. I have a nagging WHAT IF feeling that Roy banished himself cause he felt responsible for his daughter’s death but doesn’t know Mia is alive & he doesn’t know her because he hasn’t seen her since childhood
This whole debate over Mia reminds me a lot of the grave debate in Season 4. And yeah there were lots of possibilities that had some evidence like Quentin or even Diggle. People loved to toss Donna Smoak out there too. But when you take all the evidence in the show, and what they were saying, it was clearly Laurel all along.
Of course, I completely agree Roy is a possibility. I’m not even saying Bl*ck S*ren isn’t possible. Anyone who can procreate is possible. But it really comes down to two things: 1) what is the show telling us and 2) what is more likely.
Yes, Roy was missing when the gang met Mia. He has banished himself to Lian Yu, he’s not with Thea and we’re all expecting bad news with Theroy. Mia’s name is also a nod to Thea too. All true things.
But is the show working on drawing a connection to Roy when it comes to Mia? No. They aren’t. They’ve had clear shots where they are trying to establish a connection between Mia and Oliver.
The fight style.
The scotch.
The documentary.
They’ve also made a big point of showing William is Felicity 2.0.
And in all the descriptions of her character, all the comments in interviews and everything we’ve seen on screen, Mia is Oliver 2.0.
Could Mia have been trained by someone who was trained by Oliver? Yes. I think she has actually, but it doesn’t change who her parents are.
Does some of that personality thing apply to Roy or maybe even Thea? Yup. But that’s building a huge storyline around a supporting character who has been gone for several seasons and has barely been on the show this season rather than focusing it on Oliver Queen, the lead. Why cast an actress with some name recognition and her own big fandom (which Arrow rarely does) if she’s not meant to carry a substantial role? And a substantial role on this show means it has to relate directly to Oliver.
Could Mia be really interested in her uncle? Yeah. But does that pack the same emotional punch as her father? No. And that’s the question Arrow has left dangling. They’ve introduced the other kids to say, “Hey we are looking at Generation 2.0.” So the immediate question is how does Mia fit into that? Arrow wants us asking who her parents are because they are raising the question for a reason.
I’m not even 100% sold Mia knows who her parents are. There are so many questions to answer and there’s a lot of possibilities for those answers.
But I didn’t come up with the Olicity baby on my own. Arrow established the foreshadowing in Season 3. And when they do that they follow through.
I’m not saying there haven’t been some blah reveals. Yeah, Oliver married Nyssa instead of Felicity at the end of Season 3. But did the foreshadowing that he would eventually marry Felicity come true? Of course it did.
The only other time I feel like Arrow pulled a “Gotch ya” was Prometheus and I hold myself responsible for that disappointment more than the show writers. I was smoking serious crack thinking Colin Donnell could be Prometheus when he still had a contract with Chicago Med and lived in friggin Chicago. They couldn’t even get him back for the 100th.
But you know what’s funny? All the hints that made me think it was Tommy in the show (son versus son) also fit with Adrian Chase. Also, Adrian turned out to be AMAZING. Arrow eventually followed through on Tommy being Prometheus. They had him back for the Olicity movie - Crisis on Infinite Earths.
But this parent thing is either or. It’s not like they can announce Bl*ck S*ren or Roy as Mia’s parent and then later on make it connect to Olicity. So this is when I ignore the white noise, spoilers and pay very close attention to what the show is telling us. The hints are very subtle, but they always are at this stage. The writers put out the crumbs, but they don’t want to show their entire hand. But they are sending a clear message the connection is to Oliver. If Mia’s connection is to Oliver then he is her father. If Oliver is the father then Felicity is her mother.
I feel very strongly it’s the bouquet all over again. Particularly when it comes to the scotch.
If I’m wrong then Arrow has left these dangling images of connection between Mia and Oliver without explanation. They essentially mean nothing then. Like Felicity smelling the bouquet meant nothing if Olicity didn’t get married. I have to be honest a ton of people argued it meant nothing when I pointed it out and only picked up on it after Olicity got married and she threw the bouquet. So, I’ll be screaming “BUT THE SCOTCH!” just like I screamed “BUT THE BOUQUET” until Olicity got married.
Same thing with Laurel. There was a ton of dialogue, shots and imagery foreshadowing her death in Season 4. A lot of people told me meant nothing.
Well we’re in Season 7 family. At this point I think I’ve accumulated enough evidence for how this show works. The shots, imagery and dialogue do mean something. Arrow has a lot of faults but if they put something out there they follow through eventually. Will I be disappointed if Oliver and Felicity are not Mia’s parents? Of course. I’ll also have a lot of questions regarding the hints they’ve put out too. Can I be wrong? Yes. Do I think I’m wrong? No.
