OK, let's go AU for this one. This is a snippet from "The Knot," a Halloween one-shot I've been picking at for a couple of years. I'll just spoiler the entire thing right now: Edward's gonna kill Bella in the meadow scene. And it's not an accident. He has to protect her soul.
It was clear to me now… so clear. Every time Alice had showed me the image of Bella dead in my arms, here in this very moment, this very place, we’d both assumed its meaning: that I had lost the battle. That the monster had broken free at last, trampling my will and claiming his prize with one final, savage burst of power. That it was an “accident,” as we so tenderly called these failures. And those failures happened. Just because I’d never faltered myself—not in that way—didn’t mean I was invincible. Of course we’d assumed that. But now I understood.
