Hello Jstor!
I would like to say I have been a huge fan of the website and have used it extensively for not just my bachelor's but also my current master's degree program. I am very pleased to say that it has done a lot of good help for me and regards to much of my research.
With that being said, what are some primary sources that I could utilize on jstor, specifically those of medieval texts?
Assuming you have institutional access, there are tons of medieval artworks and images of manuscripts to comb through (many of which are available for those without institutional access as well). It looks like many of these manuscripts have detailed descriptions attached, which could be helpful.
We have a LibGuide available that could also point you in the right direction!
So I raised a falcon For a little over a year And when I had him tamed I wanted to keep him for myself, And I adorned his feathers with gold. But he rose up high into the air And he left for a different place. Ever since I have seen him fly And on his feet were bows of silk And red with gold were his feathers. May god bring those together Who wish to be so loved! Der Kürenberger: Ich zoch mir einen valken (approx. 1160 in Germany in Middle High German, transl. by Fayet)
Gesta Philippi arrived!! Happy birthday to me :D a slim volume but great to have some direct translation to read!
Quite amazing technology.
so like what if that noble lady had actually managed to seduce Gawain huh. would he and the green knight have to fuck
Reading The Tale of Sir Launcelot and Queen Guinevere from Le Mort d’Arthur and it is a wild ride let me tell you.
The Knight of the Cart is just full of hysterical moments; Lancelot acts like all the parodies of honourable knights I’ve ever seen it’s amazing.
The bit where he commits grand theft auto is my favourite.
‘“Say me, carter,’ seyde sir Launcelot, ‘what shall I gyff the to suffir me to lepe into thy charyote, and that thou wolte brynge me unto a castell within thys two myle?”
“Though shalt nat entir into thys caryot”, seyde the carter, “for I am sente for to fecche wood.”
“Unto whom?” seyde sir Launcelot.
“Unto my lorde, sir Mellyagaunce’, seyde the carter.
“And with hym wolde I speke”, seyde sir Launcelot.
“Thou shalt nat go with me!” seyde the carter.
Whan sir Launcelot lepe to hym and gaff hym backwarde with hys gauntelet a reremayne (a bitchslap) that he felle to the erthe starke dede’.
Like, jfc Lancelot you just MURDERED A POOR PEASANT MAN JUST TRYING TO DO HIS JOB. And then he threatens the other poor man into driving him around.
The next part is literally Lancelot storming the castle from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, it’s amazing.
‘And therewithall he bare the gate wyde opyn uppon the porter, and smote hym undir the ere wyth hys gauntelet, that hys nekke braste in two pecis.’
OH MY GOD LANCELOT JUST BEHEADED A MAN WITH HIS FIST.
The worst part is, the men he kills are just random peasants not involved with Lancelot at all they’re just doing their jobs and he MURDERS THEM. Then, when it comes to slaying Mellyagaunt for kidnapping the Queen and he begs for mercy Lancelot suddenly doesn’t know what to do? Cos knights and honour and everything? Lancelot you literally just murdered a bunch of innocents you’re a monster.
