You guys can say whatever you want about the Sabrina Carpenter thing of how it’s super offensive or people overreacting stuff like that. But the one thing I fear that you all forget, especially when a celebrity does something that might offend a group of people is that if they apologize and it’s not your apology to accept. Like it’s not your culture or anything, it’s not for you to decide what’s acceptable of that culture to tolerate of someone that says something that could hurt them whether they like it or not.
She could have written the apology better, but if you’re not Arab or middle eastern, don’t accept her apology or say she’s forgiven when she didn’t do anything to you
Ok, I have watched BookCon twice and have lost this fucking post three times, so let's do this.
My qualifications for this conversation:
1. I'm a white presenting mixed race POC. I'm exposed to a high amount of white nonsense and caucasity, because people say things to me they wouldn't say to someone more visibly racialized.
2. I'm a 2nd Generation Canadian citizen. I grew up in Canadian culture, filtered through my Dad's post WW2 Dutch and my Mom's Post Independence Trini cultures
Things we must agree upon to have this conversation:
1. Microagressions are real things that cause real damage to marginalized groups.
2. No one can tell another person that the situation they experienced didn't happen. Different people can experience the same situation differently.
3. Microagressions are different for different racialized groups and are different in every country.
I watched BookCon twice. Here is what I found of note:
JT and RR were gently mocking the crowd, themselves, and CS AS WELL AS HW. They actually said the least mocking things about HW. They said CS can't read or write, only learn Russian. JT and RR say they no longer speak to each other. JT says he no longer speaks to any of the actors.
These are obviously jokes. They also speak highly of each other, and they speak highly of HW's portrayal of autism.
When the mod reads HW's comment, they both chuckle because they've received slightly unhinged texts from HW before. RR points out that CS writes eloquent messages and HW responds with short sentences like "Yeah Dawg"
This is... pretty ADHD coded. As you may have noticed, I took go on unhinged rants IN ALL CAPS that actually mean something, and also i often respond to gorgeous, well crafted messages with "So hot." Or "Cool Story."I don't think this is a specific microagression towards HW as an Asian person.
I will not speak to the microagressions experienced by Black Americans, because I can't know them.
But in Canada, we wouldn't use chaotic as a microagression towards someone Asian. That is much more likely to be leveled at Indigenous or Black Canadians. Chaotic implies a lack of control, and that's not something anyone says about Asian Canadians. Much more likely to be called "cold" or "obsessive."I will never tell anyone that the language being used by cis white people isn't inherently upsetting. There is always a lot of privilege when they speak. But a lot of that interview is just... Canada.
I don't really think Canada has been on the International stage like this, and a lot of people are applying their norms to our country.
But we aren't like anyone else. We're self deprecating. We love with teasing. But we know who we are. We know how good we are. We know how good each other are. We're sharp, and snappy, and we chirp ourselves and each other constantly. We love with mockery because we know we're fucking awesome.
The obvious, deep respect this cast, crew and creators have for each other is clear every time I see them interact. The teasing is love.
of Kpop Demon Hunters, as one can see from the design docs.
Shin-kal = god blade. Used by shamans from hundreds of years back
Gok-do = curved sword. Gaya empire (one of many dynasties that rose and fell on the Korean peninsula), from heck of a long time ago (3-5th century CE)
Norigae = the jade + knotted silk accessories that were apparently the inspiration for Huntrix's logo
Fun facts:
They got some big-hitting actors and singers and producers in there y'all
Gwima, pronounced backwards, is Magwi, which means "demon" (mostly in a western sense)
Interesting that the warriors using the power of soulful music, dance, and harmony are women with roots in esoteric shamanism, a woman-led practice where women had authority and power, and used music, color, dance, and spiritual connection to ward off evil and talk to spirits and have been largely driven off when male-dominated western religions arrived. Their sword dances are quite famous and beautiful to watch.
So many details that respectfully and accurately depict Korean culture instead of mish-mashing it into Pan-Asian-Blah
Tiger: majestic, the ultimate beast, auspicious but also scary
Magpie: messenger of love - in a folklore love story, two star-crossed lovers that are destined to be torn apart get to meet once every year due to the hard work of these birds physically creating a bridge with their bodies so the lovers can step on them and meet in the middle of the bird bridge
They took a LOT of inspiration from a LOT of real-life people, places, events, symbols, and just... doing their best to be authentic. Kudos to the creators.
Apparently Koreans weren't too keen on trying this movie, because it was obviously made for westerners who are interested in Korea through the lens of Kpop, as the title makes very clear. No one in Korea calls it 'kpop' cuz that would be like us Americans calling all American music 'A-pop'. It's just ignorant. The genre we know as 'kpop' is actually what Koreans generally call "idol music" cuz it features idols. But there are tons of other genres many Koreans prefer over idol-dominated, spectacle-driven hits. Just like with my other rant on this being a Korean-culture movie and not a "Korean/Asian" culture movie, a good test on whether something is racist is to ask oneself: "would I do the same for my own, or a fellow white person's, culture?" If not, don't do it.
me: *wearing a yarmulke and tzitzis and a giant star of david and a tshirt that says "this is how we Jew it"* What gave it away?
rando: you're the ones with all the money, right? / can I talk to you about Jesus / free Palestine / fuck Israel / how does that little hat stay on your head / can you help me with my taxes
